Help Do I need to worry about anything if updating my Mac OS?

Basically I need to do it if I want to work remotely in a new job starting tomorrow.
I can't update to the latest because my Mac book pro is a 2015 model.
I have never upgraded before because I have never needed to (a kind of if it's not broken why fix it). When I did upgrade an older Mac, it stopped running a couple of my programmes (which was incredibly annoying)

What do I have to worry about when upgrading? Of can I just hit 'upgrade' and let my Mac sort it all out? Am I in danger of losing anything?

It's always been a bit of a lottery in my experience. Especially when it comes to video/audio software and the various plugins required.

If there's one thing that's sure as sure, its that each software update slows down the machine.

I'm doing a time machine back up anyway. It's only 200gig apparently so only a couple of hours.

Check what version of Mac OS X you can upgrade to
Check if your vital software versions are supported on that OS.
There’s no other way to definitively answer your question.
I read that Monetary is as far as I can go. . . but when I click on higher versions they all say "Compatibility - works with this MacBook Pro"(except for the latest update). So not sure what to do.

I was worried that My Logic Pro plugins might hit an issue . . . but when I looked it up, there seems to be issues with Logic Pro itself and Monetary (using older projects) even though it is an apple product. No idea if these were resolved or if I would have to go to another OS.

I really don't know what the best thing to do is.

It might be fine of course. But it sounds like you have little choice so may as well do it. It's possible to roll back the update if it all goes Pete.
They have actually recommended I don't upgrade for the reasons stated on this thread (possible fucking up audio and video apps and slowing down of the system). They said they are going to get me an older remote widget to install, but they seem to be having a bit of a fuck up themselves and keep sendingvthe wrong thing. Good job I asked them to set up in advance of starting.

Seems a bit odd to have to use your own laptop for working remotely. They've kind of made these problems by not supplying you with the equipment you need.

I'm a freelancer. Part of the job expectation is usually that I have my own kit. I am quite welcome to travel one hour to come into their editing facility rather than sit in my own edit suite at home. Surprise surprise I just don't want to.
Laptops are not really the thing to use but I connect mine to a thunderbolt screen for double screen action. If they were to send me something to work remotely with they would send a PC with two screens. . . . and they are not going to do that.

If you are upgrading to a version that isn't the latest, the upgrade will not be the .0 code version. It will be a mature patch that should have ironed out any issues with software like logic. If you were upgrading to Sonoma, you'd be right to worry but you're not so you should be fine.

Thanks. I think I am looking at Monetary. I might take a look after I finish this current job. When I look on line there are only people complaining about problems in the past, none saying "Hey don't worry, it all works great" . . . which is of course understandable. The only other issue is that I use plugins from much much smaller companies than logic and on previous upgrades I have had to contact them directly to organise a new version. . . twice they have had to write something compleatly new. It's very annoying as I paid hundreds for them . . the company is good and does sort me out, but it is a pain to organise and all the old versions in all the work I have previously done has to be manually changed and redone.

Sounds like you have a couple of contingency options anyway. Good luck.
Well I'm set up on my 2015 powerbook now and it 'seems' ok. The super good news is there are no edit suites in London for me to move into the even the worst case scenario isn't getting on a train and going to Farringdon. It's sitting at home and waiting for a taxi to deliver a PC.
I should maybe think about upgrading the OS. . . . but at the moment everything works, I am not sure what benefits I would get from upgrading.
