Located in the Tottenham Green Conservation Area, the former public toilet at the junction of Tottenham High Road and Monument Way is, despite its disused status, a local landmark in Tottenham.

After being vacant for a number of years, the building has been renovated by Haringey Council. The project has been part funded by the Mayor of London’s Growth on the High Road project, which aims to improve Tottenham High Road and make it a more attractive place to shop, meet and socialise.

The new pub, called The High Cross takes its name from the historic monument close by – marking the centre of what was Tottenham village in the 17th Century – and aims to maintain much of the toilet’s original features from the 1920s.

Co-founder, Chris Johnson said that they’re keeping the ‘Ladies’ and ‘Gentlemen’ signs outside and will light them up at night, while inside they’ve kept a lot of the original tiles as well as the original dividing walls.

A public toilet in Tottenham is set to become a new pub

It's good to see a pub opening up rather than closing down, but this will be a magnet for hipsters and other monied wankers that are moving into the area.
Better that than no pub at all. Pubs can change clientele.

usually the wrong way tho. you won't find many long-term tottenham locals attracted to drinking in hipster hell-holes charging through the nose for artisan wank.

i can't think of a single pub in hackney which has seen a return from hipsters or other gentrifiers to their previous clientele.

Tbf, The Crooked Billet did keep a lot of the old regulars , I went there before it was made over, and a crew of the proper old regulars still come and are made welcome.

Was past the auld jackdaw in Homerton and it's been transformed into some sort of shithole. The chip shop on the other side of the road looks exactly the same as it did in '93.

There was a bar in Manchester that was previously a public toilet. Don't know if it's still going though.

Yes I agree about the Billet. Not sure if it was by default or design but they didn't go "full hipster" - had a range of beers including some cheap/normal ones.

Mixed feelings about this pub. Tottenham is facing an onslaught from developer's now.
This is the heart of the Latin community in London I believe it's been saved now

London's Latin Americans Are Bearing the Brunt of Gentrification

Can't say I feel much love for the hipster bars popping up, they're alien to the area I've known for 30 odd years and the labour council have shown total contempt for residents this side of Haringey

to be fair the council have long been contemptuous of residents in the western half of the borough too
