DHFC vs Chichester (h) 25/1/25

I find it hilarious how annoyed people are about others not intensely watching the match, it’s surprising they even notice given how much time they must spend focussed on the pitch.
It only annoys me when I can't see past people who aren't watching, I was just responding to a comment about the attendance figures staying consistent. I don't think performance or results influence the former, that's all

It feels to me that there’s a minority of people that don’t really watch the game, but have a lovely time with their friends anyway. It’s a bit annoying when they get in the way, but I just try and get in early to make sure a good spot is secured.

There’s a bigger group that do watch the game, enjoy it, but don’t care that much about the result and aren’t massively invested in who’s doing what on the pitch.

The majority of who’s left watch the game, care about the result, and have likely been going for a while.

There’s probably a bit more to it, but I’d reckon most would go whatever level we were playing at, as they’d still be getting what they’re looking for from coming - and arguably, if we went down and won a few more games (or just got a bit better at the level we’re at), the majority would be even more into it.

There’s a small bit of me that worries the second group starts to outnumber the third, and the football starts becoming secondary to just being there - but the vast majority of non-league teams would love to be worried about that.

It’s more a case of being distracted by them much the same as one might be distracted by someone talking in the cinema or playing with their mobile phone.

I'm a rare visitor now but way back when the rabble was a dozen or so of us, you'd invariably have a few chatting and often barely watching the match, and a few singing. If we now need a special Rabble section with entry by invite / permission etc. it's not the Rabble...

The Rabble started out as an assortment of very different people thrown together by DHFC. I suspect Mishi would have hated the idea of a special Rabble area, though he would have approved of a Committee free area in the early years. He always felt it took all sorts to support the club and that it should be welcoming behind the goal. Many of those who sing probably started out on the fringes of the singing, looking and leaning. It was ever thus, that happened back in the early 90's too.

Meanwhile most of the 90's Rabble now watch from the sidelines. The Rabble needs to regenerate. It needs newcomers standing nearby and slowly merging in to the heart of the Rabble. The day that ceases, the end of the Rabble becomes inevitable.
I am not promoting it just pointing out such things exist - see Paula's post below. Maybe we live in a less spontaneous time. Certainly the Tooting and Mitcham era felt more vocal as do away matches where we always outsing home support

There was loosely organised effort by the main vocal group of supporters to congregate in the Toilets Opposite stand after we first began to get regular 1,500+ crowds nearly a decade ago, but that seemed to disappear after we returned from exile and 2,500+ became the norm. That's clearly the best spot for generating maximum volume, as proven with the attendances of 500+ for the current women's games.

However, I certainly don't want a clique attempting to lay down hard rules as per that Clapton CFC poster. The bit about disposing of rubbish responsibly is fair enough of course, and photographing other supporters without permission for your own amusement is rather ill mannered, but ordering perfectly reasonable people not to use the only standing cover in the ground if they don't conform to the clique's preferences is totally unacceptable to me.

We've been having this conversation for ten years now, is everyone not just incredibly bored of it?

About half the people in the ground can't even see the game anyway, what do you expect them to do?

The men's matchday experience will continue to be crap until we get the new ground built.

Max pics!

The Scaffold has an intimacy and resonance that Champion Hill would struggle to replicate. The Scaffold belongs to the fans that built it themselves. The smaller crowds too help to “police” (for want of a better word) this and the fact that almost everyone standing there is a member of the club whilst “stag dos”, “day trippers” & “wannabe influencers” are unlikely to find themselves at the OSD. Suppose someone at Dulwich could grasp the bull by the horns and produce their own version of these but would it catch on? View attachment 461398View attachment 461399
I think I donated to building scaffold

Loosely organised works best. Away matches feel like that
