Declined "Very" Account

I was there, now I'm here

I signed up for a Very account today. It originally gave me a credit limit of around £1500, and I placed an order for a camera. I received a phone call just now, which I couldn't answer, and that I've subsequently found out by Googling was from them. Then I got this in an email from then that said:

"Dear

Thank you for your recent application.

What does "conflicting information" mean? Do you think I got rejected because I didn't answer the phone? That's a bit harsh....

I imagine something came up on your credit check that they wanted to clarify, and when they couldn't get hold of you they took the quick and easy way out which is to just decline it.

Lucky escape. Their stuff is enormously expensive because you're paying for the credit. At a stupid rate too.

Unless you need the camera, save your money.

I speak from over a decade of poor credit decisions' experience. Took an enormous slog to free myself.

But I had 10% off because I was a new customer, 10% cashback from TopCashback, and was going claim £100 cashback from Canon (Canon camera).

Um call them and ask?

Struggling to work out whether this thread is serious.
I've been trying to get out of debt for years, you do NOT want credit at those sort of rates. Unless you need a new camera in order for you to continue working, just stick some money in a tin every week to save up for it rather than signing up for credit at these rates. Seriously.

Someone at Very told me that the account had been closed and to just sign up for another one....:hmm:

I managed to get it from Woolworths in the end, which are the same people, basicaly

Credit is a way of suckering people into being slaves. If you can't afford it don't get it. Free yourself.
Nonsense. "Slaves"? LOL!
I buy lots of stuff from Very and pay it all off in the interest free year.
Exactly. I got it on a buy-now-pay-later deal. As long as I pay it off before this time next year I won't pay any interest.

And besides, I want it NOW!

Massively inflated prices, but interest free. Probably more expensive than a competitive retailer + credit card fees. Mug's game.

What camera did you buy?
Canon 70D (body only).
I don't think it's overstating it, tbh. Having spent my entire adult life in bucket loads of personal debt, and having clawed myself back to about 'normal' now, I'm in no hurry to go back. You get very good at convincing yourself that it doesn't matter, but it does.
As long as one doesn't take on more debt than one can afford to pay back then it's ok. Where people go wrong is with obtaining more and more credit with no thought as to how they are going to pay it back.
My advice is to send it back and buy a camera you can actually afford. A 1500 quid camera won't help you take better photos.
I paid less than £1000 actually.

Of course, I'm in no position to comment on your professionalism as a photographer, though by the way you carry on on here, you definitely fit the profile of "blowhard amateur" rather nicely.

So I hope you enjoy playing with your £1000 debt-fuelled new toy, and don't find yourself in a position where the credit that looks so easy to pay back today is suddenly a lot harder to pay back tomorrow. Although I expect you'll find someone to blame or criticise if that does happen, so that'll be OK.

I'm not looking forward quite so much to the overweening sense of superiority your ownership of a £1000 camera will no doubt give you, nor the inevitable lectures to other Urbanites based on that sense of superiority...but then perhaps owning such a camera is worth more to you than the approval of your peers, anyway ;).

This one on very for £1099 - £100 cash back?

Is it any different than this one being sold for £599?

They seem to have the same model number and barcode. I have no idea whether SLR hut are any good but might be worth looking into. If you ordered with very over the phone or online or whatever you should have a short period of time to consider your purchase.
£599 isn't the official RRP. It looks like that site is selling grey imports, which I am a bit wary of; and if I was going to go down that route I would have probably purchased from Digital Rev.
A big mark up that!
Probably to offset the interest free credit :)

Saw this on the Very page:
Like I say £599 isn't the proper UK price, and they are selling grey imports.

If it came to that I'd just sell it, then use the money to pay it back. Simples!

For a proper price comparison, Amazon UK's price is £857.99, which is not a lot less than what I paid (I got 10% off the price for being a "new" customer), and they don't even have it in stock.
