Decent Headphones - Grado Vs AKG Vs Audio Technica Vs Sennheiser Vs Shure?

If you want closed-back headphones for use at home, I'd recommend Beyerdynamic DT 770s.

Very detailed sound and comfortable to wear. I use them for hours on end at work.

I went through two or three of these in a year, and when they break they are sealed solid so it seems impossible to locate the problem. In all the ones I had, one speaker just seemed to give in, no crackle or dodgy lead sound first. Also the sound isn't quite right for professional work, bit muddy and bassy.

Well my Grado’s have finally given up (good headphones though). Any suggestions for a high end replacement? I’m rebuilding my home studio so a pair that’ll work for that purpose as well as normal use would be cool. CAD$700 budget.

My Grado's lasted 6 years of heavy use. One other question. Are open backed better than closed for pure music listening?

I thought ‘fuck it’. So i got the Shure SRH1840’s (open backed). Haven’t used them yet. I’ll report back in a none confirmation biased way of course.

I find myself using Philips SHL3300 headphones. I bought them for DJing but they sound bloody great and cheap as chips too.

Well they sound pretty amazing. Warm with a large sound stage. Slightly fruity.
