Ive never checked his 70s material and the 80s smooth jazz thing doesnt do anything for me but the thing I associate him most is the show he presented Night Music, which loads of episodes if not all are up on youtube - some incredible shows and I think he comes across really well on that, including his playing

As stated in The Guardian's obituary:

"Eventually he became identified with the jazz-funk movement and then, unfairly, with its debased successor, the radio-friendly genre of background music known as smooth jazz."

It is also important to remember his solo work as well as the work he did making other artists' records sound good:

"But it was his solo career that truly cemented Sanborn’s status as a musical legend. From the timeless classic “Taking Off” to the chart-topping success of “Hideaway,” Sanborn’s discography boasted over 25 albums, earning him six Grammy Awards and numerous Gold and Platinum certifications ..."
