Cycling holidays in the UK

mod

A modernist
I'm keen to do a cycling holiday in the UK this summer. Somewhere me and the missus (no kids) can take our own car and new road bikes but could hire mountain bikes if needed too. I've never really done anything like this before and don;t really know where are good places for this.

Nothing too full on and ideally places where other stuff is going on. Nice walks, coast/beaches and things to do in the evenings etc.

Peak Distract seems to cover most of these things.

It's very hilly!

I know that's obvious but take it into consideration. It's hard work in the lakes unless you choose routes carefully.

Yeah I know it well. The second part of out week is gonna be by Lake Coniston which should be OK for a few cycle trips. Its 5 hours around the lake for starters

Isle of Wight. Quietish roads, everything quite close together, its down South, good countryside...could cycle the whole coast in a couple of days or take a few days and stopping of at places. You could leave the car in one place for the whole time, returning to it easily every night.

What's Norfolk like for cycling? I always presumed it's a bit like Holland. A lot more flat and so more relaxing for cycling?

flat = boring. I once road Paris to Amsterdam; boring boring, boring. It was not helped by the fact that it was a straight line most of the way, but a few hills are certainly a good thing.

Lake District gets fucking mobbed and the roads clogged up with cars, not much fun.

The Peak District kicks arse off the lakes, unless you like looking at bits of water. The Peak District's roads are much quieter, the scenery stunning and the whole area is festooned with incredibly interesting things to see and do.

That said, Isle of Wight would get my vote too.

An English colleague just came back raving about the cycling holiday he had on Skye - He's been here less than a year and this was his first trip West. :)

Of course this time of year isn't so bad for traffic or midgies, so he got-off lightly there! :D

That is wrong on so many levels!!!

The peaks is full of crazy motorbike riders and traffic can be terrible getting in and out. The lakes has some great cycling areas with no traffic like grizdale and the place up near Keswick. Forget it's name.

Although tdf your onto a winner going to either.

I'm living in the lakes at the moment but I haven't even gotten around to attaching the wheels to my bike. I might go once around Windermere this weekend if I'm not feeling lazy.
