Critical Mass 26th July 2013

so you say - i'm asking you why you think it's relevant. are you suggesting people should ignore the law because you don't like cars?

Surely, by now, in the history of human evolution, someone somewhere must have come up with an equivalent to Godwin's Law, in order to prevent any/every discussion about cycling descending into intense infantile bickering over the issue of red light jumping?

Some cyclists will always jump red lights, sure as night follows day. Their risk their stupidity AFAIAC.
Back on topic Critical mass needs to stop it's militant, antagonistic and pointless.
All it succeeds in doing is making motorists and the general public point and say "see, cyclists, fucking it up for everyone else!"
I cycle everyday and do so because it's the only affordable solution to my travelling circumstances. I am not a "cyclist", I don't think it's particularly enjoyable and certainly wouldn't consider the process as a leisure activity. Just like millions of other people who get a bus, walk, motorcycle, drive a car or van or lorry it's just a method of getting from AtoB.
The majority follow the rules, are courteous to other road users and just want to get on with their day and get home to their loved ones.
Purposely fucking up the flow of transport with this me-me! mentality is totally tantamount to whatever the fuck they're trying to achieve, IMHO of course.

how odd. i on the other hand enjoy cycling a great deal, enjoy the gentle combination of maintaining my own momentum through the world, enjoy the sun on my arms and the breeze on my face. i stop at red lights, i defer to pedestrians, i ting my bell in times of potential dAnGER!!!! which are usually caused by someone in a motor acting like a dick. six cyclists killed in london this year already, and little seems to be done to correct this, so i'll keep on going on Critical Mass for the moment, just to make the point that we're here and we have as much right, if not more, than the motorists who persist in running over innocent cyclists, quite frankly.

You've got that spectacularly backwards. The dead cyclists are the ones who affect transport policies and budgets, whereas CM is ignored by everyone except the drivers who are delayed by it. It's of no benefit to anyone except to those who get their pleasure in turning the tables on the motorists. It's fun, it's a power trip, it soothes the egos of cyclists who feel downtrodden. But don't pretend it achieves more than that. If it was many, many times bigger you could argue it's a powerful democratic protest. But it doesn't represent anyone except the few people who go on it.
