Cost of olympics vs benefit to host city

strung out

💩 🤣 🍆 💦 🧐 👻 🐝 🐈‍⬛
I remember the sydney olympics turning a profit for sydney (i think) but before that i believe atlanta made a big loss and i dont think athens did too well either. i could be wrong mind as my memorys never too great for things like this :D

whats the expected cost of the london games and are they expecting to make a profit out of it or is the real benefit of the games the rising profile of the city and what it will do for the city and country in the years after that?

who gave you that can of worms and why the hell did you open it?

The biggest disaster was Montréal in 1976 - They only paid off all debt related to the Games two years ago.

Atlanta was saved by massive corporate whoring and IIRC used no public funds, and turned a marginal profit (around US$10M, I think), but that corporate brothel was poorly received by the NOCs and the IOC. Athens had a boost from NBC fees, and I think it either turned little profit or debt - but if the sporting facilities are given use in later years, that's positive.

The popular media perceptions of 'profit' and 'loss' are for retards, or the very easily pleased.

In relation to funding an Olympics, you move everything you possibly can off the balance sheet into other Government funded areas - housing, transport, regeneration/urban renewal, 'fitness' efforts, 'athlete support', any old bollocks - to make the numbers as politically acceptable to the media as possible.

We'll never know what 2012 costs, and nor will anyone else - in the end an Olympics costs what it costs; it's entirely a game of accountancy.

london hardly needs to raise it's profile, it'll take years to see if the olympics has had a financial benefit, there will be shiny new sports facilities after the games, the stadium will go to a football club, west ham or orient seem to be in the running, maybe tottenham too, the swimming facilities might prove beneficial to medal chances in future games, you can see how manchester velodrome has paid huge benefits for our cyclists, now they'll have another place in london (are they keeping the london one?)

The stadium should go to cricket, we need a fuck off massive stadium to fill cheaply.

I'm looking forward to the legacy of Weymouth 2012

i'd like that, be pretty easy to attend games for me then:)

Personally I'm delighted the Olympics are being held in the West Country in four years' time.

Dunno why we agreed to using London as the venue for the non sailing events though

If GB don't win hatfulls down there, something wil have gone seriously wrong.

I first remember the sailing wheeze from Barcelona when Spain came away with 4 Golds - you have so many years to suss the tides, currents and winds . . . we'd have mapped all that in minute detail already, I imagine . . .
