Connecting an old PS2 to a new telly

Santino

lovelier than lovely
Has anyone recently connected a PS2 to a newer telly with an extra adaptor? I have googled some options but every adaptor seems to come with at least one review that it didn't work, or it burnt out the console's ports.

I plugged the three different coloured PS2 cables into the thing that puts the three cables into one thing and then plugged that into the long port with lots of holes, but that didn't work. Googling suggested that I need an adaptor to convert the PS2 signal into HDMI.

It’s going to end up cheaper buying a second hand old telly

By "one thing", do you mean into one co-ax, or a SCART?

edit: (I think you mean the latter by "long port with lots of holes"; might be wrong)

Have you got one of these in the back of the TV?

That is SCART. IF your TV has one, you should be fine. The PS2 had an adapter included that turned 3xRCA (a red, white and a yellow cable) into scart. They aren't usually labelled as SCART on the TV though, it might say A/V or something else. Change the source a few times and you should see it (unless it is actually bust).

Yes! It has a SCART, no that didn't work when I plugged the 3 cables into it. I know which source it is on the TV.

You can get a new Ps2 Scart cable on ebay for about four quid.

Does the one you have look damaged? Have you put the leads in the right holes? [emoji4]

I think I have a spare adaptor thing. Away with work tonight but can check my box of retired cables and adaptors tomorrow when I'm back. It's possible I've only got the RCA to SCART adaptor and not the cable that goes in the ps2 though. :(

Scart connections are one way so just to check, does the scart adaptor have a switch to change it between in and out? The tv should only have an in socket but it could have both if one is used as a pass through.
Sure this isn't it but worth asking i guess.

Can't see a switch. It's the SCART adapter that came with the PS2. The socket in the TV does work because we can still play the old Wii through it.

Most likely thing is that the scart adaptor or cables out of the PS2 have died then.
