Cheapish Personal Trainer Recommendation??

Does anyone know any local Personal Trainers who won't charge the earth? I really want a few sessions to try and get myself off my lardarse.... and I really think a personal trainer is the only way (yes i am that lazy)... help?!

I think stunned silence reflects how many people here use trainers as well as prices of trainers! Suggest you ask reception in the Horizons club on Liberty Ave, stockwell. They recommended one to me, who I never called....

Quite happy to follow you with a shot gun until you start running.....

Seriously best thing to do is enter some race i.e. a goal with some others for company 5K , 10K , that'll give you something to work towards. Don't pay someone to tell you do it.

Personal Trainers really are a truly decadent invention: you're paying someone to make you get off your arse because you can't be bothered to do it yourself.

My suggestion is that you just walk more. Don't use lifts. Get off a few stops early and walk. Sign up to a gym if you must. Or get a Wii and jump around your front room.

Boys, boys, if she wants a personal trainer, she wants a personal trainer. Go easy on her....

Seriously, they are a good way of getting your arse in gear if you are lacking in motivation, want to reach a new goal etc.

You mean "reaching a new goal" of getting up off your arse because you're too lazy?

A First World Problem if ever I heard one.

Sure it's a first world problem, just like finding the best coffee in Brixton :)

I walk everywhere, and that is the only reason I am not American-sized, but a trainer may get me a flat stomach. And I want a flat stomach. Now if I could only persuade myself to do something about it- good for Pippa for taking the first step to whatever her version of a flat stomach is.

Oh yes, That's remarkably relevant.

I was being facetious. Thought that was de rigour round here? :)

All I meant was, that there are lots of first world problems, and one is no better/worse than another. Live and let live. At least she is looking for something fitness related not a humidor for her selection of cigars or something PROPERLY decadent

Well it provides jobs and helps with direct income redistribution from those with plenty to spend.

Those "army bootcamp" things seem to be very popular. The hostel I work has had one running out it all weekend and it didn't strike me as that military...think the mostly largish middle age women who were on it may have died if it was.

Pippa, have you thought about doing an exercise class? The Brixton Rec has loads of classes to choose from and they are pretty cheap too.

What about joining a local council gym most do inclusive classes - some hard and some gentle :D

I think you're being a bit harsh. For some people they need the motivation of doing exercise with someone else until they get confident enough to get going on their own (I speak from personal experience). And while some people may have mates that are up for doing that with them and being supportive, it's not the case for everyone. And it may be that 2-3 sessions with a trainer may help. Maybe decadent in your eyes, but for some people it's what works.

In answer to the OP, sorry but I don't know. But like others have said there's classes at the Rec, or also at the Lido (although they're not cheap if you're not a member). Maybe phone both the Rec and the Lido if you're really set on seeing a Personal Trainer and see if they have any recommendations.

I was about to say the same thing. And if you don't know where to start or have health issues, they can be a really good investment. The NHS will pay for it for some conditions too. So not just an example of bourgeoise decadence...

Try Park Run. 5k on Saturdays at 9.00 outside Lido. Best if you sign up first. It's free and for all levels from walkers to top end
athletes. About 170 people last time and lots of supporters.

I'd say 40% of those using my local gym/pool are doing so to combat existing medical conditions and therefor saving the NHS millions.

Yes. I do this. And love it. The times vary from 15mins to 40mins to complete nearly two laps.

You go as slow as you want.

It's a really good atmosphere. There is also one in Dulwich Park which is flatter. Same time.
What sort of time do you do LM?

I have an issue with personal trainers in the park getting their clients to jump on and off benches and to swing on elasticated bands lassoed to vulnerable tree branches.

Benches will be fine.... But they should only use big trees. Or maybe they should introduce the jumps and monkey bars and stuff they have in almost every park in Germany, the Netherlands etc. we really aren't very well served for health and fitness stuff in Britain.

I saw that in Brockwell Park a few weeks ago. Thought it would be more fun to use it as a catapult to expel the trainer out of the park.

:D

welcome to urban :D

most gyms will do you a program when you join. try doing that and sticking to it and then getting regularly reassessed.

there is nothing decadent about doing this, it is your fitness, do what works for you.

although walking more is the best advice as well.
