Call your bank and make sure they unlock your card for global use, otherwise they might block it and you wont be able to use it at the cash point. I usually take enough cash to survive the first 24 hours anyway, as my bank are shit and have said they'll unlock my card and then haven't. Although if they do fuck-up you can make them give you compensation when you get home.
Depends where you're going too...if you're going to rural Mexico will they want you paying by card for lots of stuff? The retailer/merchant gets charged quite a whack for you to pay by card. I still got charged for using Visa debit abroad, only a small % but keep it in mind.
I'd look at cash/travellers cheques myself - I only take cash out of an ATM near the end when I'm sure I need it.
Visa credit or debit is way to go, you will get a much better exchange than buying cash as they use their muscle to settle their accounts using the internationla money markets and buy in much bigger numbers.
