Cheap, peaceful, warm, last minute holiday with a sandy beach?

Any ideas.

There's plenty of last minute deals but none of them look particulalrly oeaceful or relaxing.

We want to be able to swim in warm sea water. Preferably on a desolate beach. And feast on tasty vegetarian food.

Do i want the moon on a stick?

Turkey is stupidly cheap at the moment, like hotel + flights for a week for ~£300pp. I have been to and rate Antalya as a province - it has sandy beaches and nice vegetarian food. The sea is very warm, and there is stuff you can do other than just sit on the beach (e.g. go round Roman ruins). It does border Syria, but I assess the chances of being blown up as quite low :) .

South of Portugal? Andalucia away from the big resort towns? Or have they become expensive now?

What about Tunisia? My niece's family are going because it is warm and cheap.

Good man. I would check out Cirali down the coast from Ant - no clubs or goldfish bowl piss artistry - a massive beach, olive groves and on the edge of the national park. An ancient city that has collaosed into the sea , snorkelling and tons of turtles- the beach is a protected nesting spot. and only an hour or two from the airport- there are not too many hotel and they are pretty much spread out and low rose i.e. chalets - and they will likely pick you up from the airport as well...

Possibly.

Le Grau du Roi. We found it accidentally a few years ago. It's on the French Mediterranean coast in Gard, and borders the Camargue. Hire some bikes and cycle (there are cycle paths and tracks) along miles and miles of deserted and desolate beaches with salt marsh lagoons on one side and the Med on the other. You can easily spend a day on the beach without seeing anyone else except the occasional nudist.

You can have a mile of wild beach all to yourself.

Le Grau du Roi itself is a small resort used mainly by working class French folk so no fancy bars or expensive hotels and restaurants (the posh bit is Port Camargue). The attraction is the wilderness of the surrounding area but Arles, Montpellier, and Avignon are less than an hour away. And it's cheap.

Fly to Montpellier or Nimes for about £100 return; hire a car for £100; rent a cheap apartment for £250 for the week, then just get out and about in the car or on hired bikes.

I can't promise loads of decent veggie food options, it's France, but there are plenty of markets and if you rent an apartment you can do your own cooking.

Let me know if you want more info or tips.

I was going to suggest Sardinia (for the second time this week) on a similar basis.

Fly to Olbia on easyJet, stay there, hire a car or get buses to the beach.

Vegetarianism probably significantly better tolerated.

It's pretty cheap about now, but then gets super-expensive in peak season as the Costa Smerelda is basically a billionaire's playground.

I've plenty of recommendations if you do this.

Agreed, but stay away from the Costa Smerelda. Wanker central.

The east coast road on Sardinia is also one of the most stunning drives in Europe, imo, though not for the faint hearted.

We went last year (I think) at the end of May, it was largely empty. That photo (not mine but I have similar) is from Palau, looking out towards La Maddalena - so not the Costa Smerelda peninsula as such, but pretty close, and you wouldn't know it was supposed to be expensive. I forget when peak season is, August maybe. End of May was definitely 'off'.

We were there in 2001 (9/11 happened whilst we were in Sardinia). Loved it for the most part and we did drive around the Costa Smerelda to have a look. We were drinking £10 lagers at a bar when an enormous yacht with a helicopter on it came into the port. We watched for a while, then a ramp came down and two Ferrari's drove off it. The fawning attention that this attracted made us realise that the place was chock-full of tossers, so we fucked off and enjoyed the rest of the island.

Formentera in the Balearics; half an hour on the ferry from Ibiza town harbour. Wonderful island, you can bike all round it in a few hours and it's not awash with fast food joints and tossers. Playa Migjorn or Playa Ses Illetes are particularly lovely.

Or La Gomera, in the Canaries. 50 minutes by ferry from Tenerife Los Cristianos.

Valle Gran Rey is well nice, some relaxing bars, good food, nice and tidy. The island is great for hiking, whale/dolphin watching and just plain relaxing.

I'd recommend Dalyan in Turkey - 30 minutes from Dalaman airport, river to swim in, ancient tombs, huge sandy natural beach that has turtles nesting on it. You can see turtles in the river too.

Get an apartment and it'll be even cheaper cooking your own food - lovely fruit and veg in season at the moment, very cheap sold by the kilo. Pound is in your favour at the moment. It's one of the few places I go back to every year as it's so relaxing. Very green and you can visit ancient tombs as well.
