Chatham v Hamlet (Isthmian League) New Year's Day 01.01.24 (3pm ko)

A second game in 48 hours away to a newly promoted team having the sort of season we all hoped the Hamlet would have. Chatham must have brought forward their game originally scheduled for yesterday and played it on a free Saturday earlier in the season, as they don't have any games in hand on us and we're bang up to date with ours, so we appear to be at a bit of a disadvantage playing again after only 48 hours. Hak said in his post-match interview yesterday that he'll be rotating the squad. I would imagine we'll see Harrison Hatfull on the field in Hamlet colours for the first time. Kresh must be a doubt after limping off yesterday, but there was no mention of whether Ryley is likely to be fit. Hopefully Ravan's knock yesterday won't keep him out, although Preston is obviously capable of stepping in if needed. (Incidentally the club Twitter feed mentioned that Michael Chambers was the nominated emergency goalkeeper had one been required.) Chatham's squad includes former Hamlet hero Chris Dickson, who turned 39 this week and has been banging in the goals since moving from Erith & Belvedere a couple of months ago.

The ground is on the main Maidstone Road about 1 mile south of Chatham station. It's a steady uphill gradient on the way there, but obviously a less arduous walk on the way back! There are no Southeastern train services in and out of Victoria, so the usual Victoria to Chatham trains via Bromley South aren't running. The local services via Herne Hill and West Dulwich are running in and out of Blackfriars instead, but if you use that line you'll have to change at Bromley South and again at Swanley for Chatham. There are four direct trains an hour from London Bridge to Chatham (starting from Charing Cross or Cannon Street, journey times 45-80 minutes) with the fastest services leaving at 39 minutes past the hour. Cheapest route (avoiding Zone 1) will be on the Thameslink line from Denmark Hill, Peckham Rye, Nunhead etc., changing at Swanley for Chatham. Unfortunately I'm now unable to make it myself.

Spoke to a couple of Chatham fans at Hollands and Blair v Lordswood yesterday. They fancy our chances so fingers crossed.

I live locally, as far as drinking options go, there's a bar at the ground but that's likely to get busy. Otherwise turn right out-of Chatham Station and you'll see the Alexandra pub. Small but friendly and can drink outside in the beauty of Chatham town centre. Otherwise, about another 300 yards straight on past there is a huge Wetherspons with a similar chain pub opposite. Afterthought it's just a case of climbing the bastard of a hill to the ground. Luckily the 101 bus stops next to train station and outside the ground. Tomorrow they're running a Sunday service which will be roughly every 20ish minutes.

If downtown Chatham doesn't appeal, and why it wouldn't i don't know, but Rochester has a plethora of drinking and eating options and is only one stop before Chatham and a sherbert to the ground should run about 15 nicker.

One thing to bear in mind if seeking a particular pub is they don't all open on New Year's Day, or only open for reduced hours, so best to check on a pub's social media or telephone them before walking any distance. It's one of the worst days of the year for attempting a pub crawl. You can guarantee Wetherspoon's will be open all day though.

I'm looking forward to seeing Chris Dickson tomorrow though the law of averages mean he's nailed on to score against us! 😂 I'm half convinced he scored last time we played there though the mists of time have likely obfuscated my recollection.

The last time we played there was a B team game 😉
First team wise, we played there under Rose and I think we had Carlton Murray-Price up top not Dicko.

Ah yes, the B team game. A wicked evening that was.

I'm convinced I can remember Dickson banging in a penalty there but happy to be corrected.

Our last visit was a 2-0 win in January 2010, with two Junior Kadi penalties. Dicko played for us in 2006/7, when we won 3-0 there to go top of the table with goals from Sol Pinnock (2) and Jamie Coyle.

On another day Rochester looks like a day out on a par with Lewes, with old pubs and plenty of history.

This article flags up a Chatham craft beer place called the Dead Pigeon, which sounds cracking for pre match beers and food but sadly I don't think it's open tomorrow.

The Dead Pigeon is an uber hipster shithole. A few doors down would have been the 12 Degrees, a cracking micropub. 👌

Quite a few changes. Constable out injured, along with Krasniqi and Scott presumably, while 2 games in 3 days (and 3 in 7) maybe too much for Ricketts and Mills. It's certainly an opportunity for one or two of those who've become marginalised to enhance their standing.

Can I have this week’s lottery numbers please.

At the risk of lapsing into self-parody, the contrast in atmospheres and noise levels in the first and second half should really prove behind all reasonable doubt how much difference a simple corrugated iron roof makes.

Brilliant vibes first half, flat as a pancake in the second half (even when we were winning).

[Gonna politely tag Ben Clasper to continue my roof-related lobbying efforts]

Now I've calmed down a bit.....

On todays display, we have more to be positive about than negative. We matched a very good side for most of the game and outplayed them at points. A couple of costly mistakes and a lack of cutting edge is all. We correct those and we'll be mustard.

It could have been a hell of a lot worse.

Cant add much to what has been said above, decent display and deserved a point without really threatening to win.

With Scott and Kresh injured, and Ricketts taking a day off(?), I feared the worst, but Allen did a decent shift in the middle. It's a bit lazy to target the manager's teenage son but he hasn't shown anything when I've been watching that makes me think he's worth a start at this level.

Chatham was a stereotypical place, decent set-up reminiscent of Billericay in the Tamplin era, with generic chanting and guys clad in tight jeans and Moncler/Canada Goose jackets everywhere.

Friendly enough though, and fast connections back to SE22 made for a decent day out, despite the score.

I was actually really impressed by Chatham. Everyone always says "what can other non-league clubs learn from Dulwich?", but we have such unique advantages (not least geography) that mean the club's off-field success is likely impossible to emulate.

Chatham probably offer a much more achievable example: regular 1,500+ crowds, a stadium set up for watching football, generally very friendly, a youth set-up attached and (if the clubhouse is anything to go by post match) a good social scene.

No delusions of grandeur, but a local community club that seems to get a lot right.

What did hatfull look like?

The Spoons was another beautiful building that wanker Tim has done. I am with him on that. It used to be the Post Office for North Kent i think.
