Chaos in Paris

Attacks on signal boxes and wiring. Thousands of charred wires to be fixed manually, one by one. If you ever thought the wires behind your TV boxes were a problem...

Also reports of an airport being closed but not confirmed as related.

Still no claim of responsibility. Could get interesting.

Very well coordinated.

I think the lack of claims of responsibility is interesting. It doesn't seem the sort of thing a state actor would do (though they would obviously not claim responsibility). And not claiming responsibility is a good way of not pointing a finger at yourself, avoiding detection...which makes me wonder if there's more to come.

I don't think someone planned that so well just for the Lolz.

Not claiming also adds to chaos too…

I'm going to guess it's a protest about the government's stance on Gaza. Well, if there were a government. At the moment there is none!

Telegraph going with the “it’s the Ruskies” angle. Macron did come out back in April with a warning that Russia might target the games in unnamed ways, so I don’t know what to think. No doubt more will emerge over time, but whether it’s the truth or a cover story, who knows….

I'm speculating, obviously, but there isn't the kind of organised, militant leftists with the numbers, resources and skills to do such a campaign of sabotage in any European country these days. The only groups active are environmentalists. The eco groups now are not exactly ELF are they?
My money is on Putin.

good point. the eco activists are generally non-violent and also generally stick around to claim their attacks and get arrested.

but attacks of this kind have been performed by the militant left in France in the relatively recent past.

agree that it's easier to believe it was Russia given the precedent.

Anarchists have a history of targetting the high-speed rail network in Italy, just saying
And in the UK for the 2012 London Olympics. Probably posts here.
"lifted concrete slabs running alongside the tracks and burned out the signalling cables found in the trench underneath".
It described Tuesday's actions as guerrilla activity and said it had "no inhibition" about using such methods again. Characterising the Olympics as a "spectacle of wealth" in a time of austerity, it ended the statement saying it wanted "civil war" and that anarchy was "unavoidable".
