Chaos in Paris

Happy Tree

maagilises metsas
The Parisians on Tiktok are complaining about what a shitshow it is. All the streets have been blocked off with barriers, café terraces are empty, takings are subsequently way down, restaurants can't get deliveries, you need a QR code to be allowed to go down certain streets and not all the police have QR code readers. Plus there's rumblings of strikes, as always.

Landlords and Air B&B hosts are also not doing well. With empty places and slashed rents, their price gouging is not going as well as they'd hoped. I wonder what this will all look like once it actually starts!

Parisians complaining. Plus ca change.

I guess when they're using so much of the inner city for events, it was inevitable it was going to be chaotic. Even in 2012 with most of the events either confined to Stratford or significant sporting venues outside of central London (Wimbledon, the O2 etc), there were screw ups with security - eventually leading to the army being drafted in to fix. They should've had this as a backup.

Imagine they're extremely concerned about security and potential terrorist incidents. There have been quite a few in recent years, mainly lone attackers, but obviously the November 2015 attacks will be at the forefront of the security people's minds.

I'm surprised private rented accommodation isn't doing well. Usually at these big events you can't get a room for love nor money. Have they priced themselves out of the market?

My mate who lives in Paris has run away for the duration to the south as have loads of others. The news there has been trailing it as a chaotic shit show for at least the last year so hopefully they've managed expectations well and it'll be great. Hotel rooms are pretty reasonable price wise now if you look.

It’ll be fine.

Superficially, at least, it does seem very reminiscent of London 2012, and that did eventually turn out fine, for the most part.

That said, once again left feeling like going in the first week won't turn out to be the best decision I've ever made. Ah, well, no changing it now, will just have to see how it goes...

France is a very bureaucratic country. They have set up checkpoints in Paris and you have to have a particular QR code on your smartphone to get through them. Consequently, the radio is reporting that central Paris is currently almost deserted.

I didn't attend any events in 2012, but in terms of disruption to everyday life for Londoners, there was very little. Sounds like this isn't the case in Paris.

Their organisation at a stadium entry level in Marseille for rugby World Cup last year was a shit show. Plenty of fans were in late as the ground had a massive entrance which no one knew about the far side of the stadium and a tiny narrow one off the main road where all the bars were

Not forgetting the brilliant organisation displayed at the Champion's League Final (a soccer tournament your honour) in Paris in 2022

During London 2012, someone at work went to one of the football matches that was taking place local to us. He said that due to the sponsorship rules someone had gone round all the toilets covering up the name Armitage Shanks as they were not a sponsor. That tells me everything I need to know about these horrible events.

Aye, fair point; I was thinking more in terms of the experience for visitors, at the venues, etc (following mention of the army being drafted in to help with venue security checks, after G4S(?) totally whiffed it).

Was gonna take a bunch of disabled people from w london to some paralympics event in stratford but getting there wasn't viable due to tfl accessibility issues.
Fuck them. Two faced cunts.

London is much bigger.

In 2012 London hoteliers were busy gouging as much as they could and most of them failed to sell their rooms. I managed to book a free night at the Mayfair, where the IOC were staying, about a week before during the games, they had so much space they could give away rooms to people with Radisson points. Now people are asking if Paris is booked out, just yesterday I booked a bunch of rooms here, had the pick of all the hotels. Basically, as in 2012 if you're not going for the games you'll stay away from the place.

That sounds like bollocks to me. I don’t remember seeing anything like that at the Paralympics and never seen anything like it at international football events who also have no toilet sponsors.

Some football teams have some ridiculous sponsor deals, I think Manchester United had an ‘official tractor’ firm at one point.

It will only be a matter of time before there’s an ‘official toilet supplier’ :hmm:

It was the official urban myth of the Olympics. All other tall tales about overbearing sponsors had to be debunked.
