Card reader advice, please

Any advice please on an affordable card reader for a voluntary outfit? We relied on cash pre-covid and are only now starting up again.

We run around 8 events a year charging £5 entry and would count ourselves lucky to get 40 people to an event. It's an informal set up where people will turn up on the night to pay at the door rather than booking ahead. Trouble is, they don't carry fivers on them these days.

Our bank (we have precious little in the bank!) has just quoted our treasurer a monthly fee of £47 for a 36 month contract for cardnet, which is obviously totally out of the question.

There must be cheaper ways.

Zettle or Sumup.

I have a Sumup. It's fine.

You don't need one of those card readers that the banks offer.

If you do go for a Sumup they have a referral scheme where you get a £20 discount on the card reader and then they give £20 to me for referring you. Let me know if you want to do that.

Thank you! That's exactly the sort of thing I had in mind, but a recommendation is so much more helpful than rummaging around cluelessly on the web. I'll bear that in mind about the discount for you.

Place I used to work got a couple of Zettles in early spring 2020 with a view to using them at outdoor things that summer and it seemed quite a good deal (although it wasn't clear how much mobile data they would eat)

Unfortunately I left late last year, and not sure they ever got used...

No worries, they are pretty much identical so you may find Zettle does something you need that Sumup doesn't. They take a little commission but nothing like the big card machine people do. All the market traders and now ice cream vans use one or the other.

Just having a nose about and to save people having to use their personal phones for the app and too many people having access to the account they do this one which is totally standalone and unlimited free data.

Link here if you so decide, they won't tell me anything about you and vice versa. We both end up £20 ahead.

Yup, we have that for our footy clubs, works really well, takes 1.69% as a fee
