Can we talk about a gaming computer?

My son wants a new gaming computer.

Up to date graphics card, fast processor etc ..

He thinks he might be able to re-use his existing box (quite large), possibly also his SSD and HDD drives, his two monitors and keyboard etc ..

What do you think?

What is an up to date gaming PC these days?

He'll be able to use that. Might have to change motherboard etc. If you go to Pick parts. Build your PC. Compare and share. - PCPartPicker then he can put in different combinations and it will tell you if it works together and how much it will cost.

We have been talking about that.
Does it have to be budget before spec?

He thinks £800 would do it.

Budget does a good job of setting a range.

I was going to try and give my opinion but on thinking about it I think I'm too out of the loop to judge what makes for a decent gaming rig nowadays.

Absolutely. You can spend thousands. Heck you can spend more then that on the GPU alone.

That said with parts to reuse it should be very possible. A big question is what resolution does he want to game at. Does he play ”esports" where very high FPS are important.

I'd also want to check the current power supply. A nice saving if it can be reused, but not something to cheap out on.
