Brixton roller rink

Being very old now (71) I could not find any information on the roller rink in Effra Road in Brixton, or any threads from people who used it ( maby they are all dead ) So I will give a bit of history from my point of veiw, I was a frequent vistiterfrom 1955, sometimes 4 times a week, to the rink till the day it closed without any ceremony what so ever, I turned up on a saturday afternoon to see a notice on the door saying " this establishment is now closed ", I was in the speed team that sent woodley into the record books with his world records, I watched Chole Richardson do the same with the ladies records, the speed team were called the "Falcons" the skates of the day were made by Dexter from somewhere in Cristal Palace, and of course the wheels were wooden and as it happends I still have them, the wood wheels have long gone and I used them on Eastbourne promanade just three weeks ago, I tried to upload a photo of them but could not find anyway to do it, I met my first wife there and I think she still has her skates from that time too I dont know how much room I have to write in this foram but would love to hear from anybody who would like to know more

It was opposite George Canning/Hootenanny and the site is now occupied by the dazzling beauty that is the Allied Carpets building.

The building still stands, I went into it a few months ago on the pretex of looking at carpets and had a good root round, the markings on the floor are still there, the whole floor was/is sprung, you did really bounce around on it when you hit the deck, I broke my shoulderblade one saturday afternoon and my fingers more times than I can remember, no "Elf and safty" then, no nee pads or crash hats or any of that namby pandy rubbish then, but we did wrap a hanky around our left hand just in case we hit the floor which we did with unbending regularity, my bum looked like a bus map for many years

Hello. :)

I think you might be our oldest poster. Glad to see you're still rollerskating.

Yep, it was where Allied Carpets is. I was discussing it with a friend who remembers it only a few months ago.

Surely Carpet Right on Effra road / water lane, not Allied Carpets on Brixton hill.
The sprung floor is still there? I'm going to have a look.
