Brixton Market will open this Bank Holiday Monday

Afternoon all,

The new owners of Market Row and Brixton Village have listened to traders and the market will be open on Bank Holiday Monday.

This is the first time the market has opened on a Bank Holiday in living memory.

NB I am a trader in the Market with no connection to the new owners.

Cheers

Seems to be about 59/50 split of traders who support the bank holiday opening and those who prefer to have a rare day off with their friends/family.

It's not the first bank holiday the covered market arcades have been open. But it's my understanding LAP used to make traders who wanted the arcades open on bank holidays pay extra for that.

Presumably there is a service charge for tenants of the market. The cost of opening, security, light, management will have to be paid even if you don't open.

Well, that's right. And of course it's mainly the cafés that want to open. The butchers, fishmongers and grocers want their bank holiday off.

It's not so good if you find your boss instructing you to come into work when all your friends are enjoying a Bank Holiday.
True. But that’s the service industry. I wonder how many people will really “find their boss instructing them to come to work” if they don’t want to. Few or none I reckon.

You've clearly never worked in such jobs. There's plenty of people being told they have to work Bank Holidays when they don't want to, not that I expect you to care about them.

I see with your typical dishonesty you have expanded this from being about Market Row and Brixton Village to being about being told to work Bank Holidays in general.

I worked in the service industry and after that in shift work for many many years and had to work times when I’d rather not have. So you have made yet another wrong assumption about me.

However I, and anybody I ever worked alongside never moaned because it was Part of the jobs

But fair play to you for sticking up for people who have to go and do their job at the times they expect to :D:facepalm:

Tomorrow is the first bank holiday this year I won't have been in the office. It's not just a service industry thing.

But, it's part of the job. To be honest, I've never really thought about it.

Question is whether it will be worth opening at all.....town seems very quiet today, maybe the yup faction have decamped en masse to the Home Counties and are currently enjoying g and t's and croquet on the lawns.

Oh yes, I'm absolutely sure no one ever complained about being forced to work Bank Holidays for shit money in your fantasy world. Or maybe all your chums weren't complaining because they're all in well paid in nice jobs?

Well paid nice jobs behind a bar? :D

You should stop replying, you’re making a fool of yourself trying to make a point that doesn’t exist.

In the spirit of transparency, I did play both croquet and boules today

So the real reason you try (and fail) to pick an argument comes out :D:thumbs:
It's statement of fact: you do nothing for Brixton so why are you even posting here if not to pursue your shitty little personal beef at the expense of a decent discussion by people who actually live here?

You even claimed that no one would ever get their bosses telling them to work on a Bank Holiday. How fucking idiotic is that?

If you look at the thread you’ll see you started a baseless argument due to your personal dislike of me. You naused it up making non points. Then you get all angry. Now that really is fucking idiotic.

Actually I had to work today but now I’m finished, so I’ll love you and leave you. I’m off to the pub, probably to be served by a poor bastard forced to work.

I'm banning you from this thread. You're already been allowed to do far too much damage to threads on other topics that are important to Brixtonites.

Blimey, that took off quickly.

Few small follow up points of info that might be useful: The decision to open on the Bank Holiday was taken after polling all traders and from what I saw the vast majority wanted to open. Secondly, there is no extra cost to traders for the market opening on the Bank Holiday and no penalty should they decide they don't want to open either.

It's just that I personally know several people who have had to work today and they're really pissed off about it. I mean who wants to work in a low paid job with weather like this - and when Hamlet have got a play-off final!

I agree! I would rather be sitting in the park with a beer and a happy dog jumping around. People should be given a choice and if they work bank holidays then paid time and a half.
