Banksy's latest wizard wheeze

It did strike me as a tad too orchestrated. I am sure the record shops are in cahoots too as they want to promote the sale of hard copy CDs.

I agree. Especially when you look at the small details behind it.

Firstly, they are not Banskys own recordings - he does the art, but they are by Dangermouse - he of the Grey Album etc. Both Dangermouse and La Hilton are on the same label, with the same distibution.

Taken that it would be virtually impossible for Banksy to be able to get around the country in one night, intercept the lorry carrying the CD's or break into the premises, find the boxes of unopened CD's, replace a few of them in each location, put them back without anyone realising (have *you* ever tried to get those labels off a CD from HMV?) and not get caught, it doesnt take a genius to work out that its easier to make 500 CD's remotely with packaging etc and get them put in the packages at the production plant (like you do with Instant win competitions).

Its a marketing exercise to promote one CD and two artistes. And Banksy has associated his name with it to give it that 'cool' edge.

Shame on you Banksy. Shame on you.

I do agree with you there, but could he not have simply taken the doctored cds into the stores? In opening hours and just left them there? But i do think you could be right, but i hope your not. If that makes sense?

Hmmm...could have done I guess. But he would have had to have bought the copies first, as they still have the Paris Hilton barcode on them. Not very Banksy like - to ensure that the artiste still receives their royalties, especially the artiste in question. But yeah. He could have done.

I've just downloaded the apparent CD music and its one 39 minute track with Paris going 'That's Hot' for the duration.. mildly amusing.. can't be sure its real though..

Gonna be worth more than Ms Hiltons CD ever will.

Appart from the books its one of the 1st actually tangible pieces of work that can be owned that I've heard of.

I have got a Bank of Banksy tenner, will Lady D's head on it with crossed eyes instead of the queen.

A friend got passed it carnival about 3 years ago was so pissed off gave it to me, I met a guy in a pub who said it was a proper Banksy peice. So it must be!

Anyone who does something to undermine the status of that pointless clotheshorse (or unclothedhorse) gets lots of kudos in my book. :)

do you think it does undermine her status? really? how?

Heh, cheers!:D

No worries :)

Banksy isn't as right on as people think. Me and Cyberfairy had a run in with his 'minders' at Glastonbury last year. Right intimidating they were. They nearly had my camera off me. If they had done i would have been up banging on the farmhouse door complaining to Eavis as it was written in the programme that we should look out for Banksy round the site as part of the 'attractions'.

What was he doing at Glasto Lisa?

He had done bits of art on some of the toilet cubicles and walls. I happened to catch him touching up one of them with stencils in the circus field and tried to take a photo of him. It was the middle of the day, loads of people were watching him doing it, but i was surrounded by 3 aggressive blokes giving it the "Banksy should never be photographed" bollox. I thought they were joking at first, but they weren't :(
I did try and point out that if he wants to remain anonymous then we shouldn't have been told to look out for him in the programme and that he does do exhibitions, which he attends and isn't very anonymous at

Not very annoymous at all! Hardly covert.
Here's a video of him doing the cd drop. I'm gonna go out in a bit, see if i can find one. I'm not hopefull tho.

that bloke is about to be loaded (cos he's selling all three copies on ebay).

looks like his girlfriends crappy job at smiths finally paid off

I HAVE THREE COPIES THAT I AM SELLING OVER A FEW DAYS. (MY GIRLFRIEND WHO WORKS AT WH SMITH HAS BEEN ABLE TO GET ANOTHER TWO QUICK MINT CONDITION COPIES FOR QUICK SALE AS THEY WERE PULLED FROM WH SMITH ALSO) - SO ON EBAY I AM SELLING THREE AND I AM ALSO SELLING HER COPIES - TODAY ONLY! ONE DAY SALE!

My mate just came up with a cunning plan, buy one off ebay, make copies of them, sell them on for big bucks. Pay day!

yea make a quick buck on ebay ...brilliant  makes me angry that people are cashing in on it when it seems that its exactly what the original concept of banksys stunt was against....

someone even ripped a board in half on one of his main pieces in liverpool so that they can take the signature tag on the rats marker pen home.... Selfish fools!

Ahh yes, your right I remember seeing that in one of the books. How good does it feel or is it just a bit of A4?

It seems to me entirely in the spirit to sell it off - what do you see as that spirit?

At the end of the day, it's all about the promotion of Banksy as a brand, and has been for years, so he's succeeded pretty well.

I'll stick up for Banksy a little bit. I don't know the man, but some good folks and some serious activists down here speak highly of him. He's always contributed generously to their causes with new artwork and plenty of freebies, from the Reclaim the Streets days to RnB meetings

Of course, no-one could predict just how big he could be, nor how much his posters would turn out to be worth. But the sale of many donated Banksy pictures has helped to keep many an organisation and individual afloat down here. It's not perfect, but at least he's led to some positives.

i'm not against him at all, just think that it's a bit daft to think that this latest stunt means anything in the way of subversion - it's just the society of the spectacle in action.....
