Apple M1 and related devices

Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?
Have to say haven’t been this interested in traditional computers in nearly two decades. The M1 tests I’ve seen have been nothing short of incredible and they’re still the consumer line and first generation!

Seriously tempted to update my four year old MBP next spring when the pro M1 line comes out. Anyone else tempted to jump in on the first gen?

I'll be tempted when they release the 16 inch version of the MBP.

I'm currently using a 15 inch 2013 model which still runs fine, but is getting a little bit clunky with certain tasks.

I already jumped on the Mac mini M1 so that I can figure out what is practical as a developer, even for these baseline models.

Waiting until various developers have either updated work essential apps or confirmed they're fine on the new chips, at which point I'll likely get a new MacBook Air.

I think I'll pass on this gen (I mean I can't afford a new computer anyway, so...), but they do look phenomenally impressive.

I was thinking about an M1 Mini but I am actually fine with my Macbook Pro, it's only a couple of years old and does everything I want it to as fast as I want it to.

space bar is a bit sticky though :hmm:

I've said I'm going to get myself a new MacBook if I get onto a paramedic science degree with work, so I've been eyeing them up, but suspect it will be 2/3rd gen before I'm getting one.

Yesterday I switched from my now quite ancient (2007 but upgraded) cheesegrater mac pro to a brand new M1 mac mini. First time I've bought a mac new - the fact that it didn't cost much more than a high end smartphone was part of that decision.

I'd say it's quite impressive the mac pro is still going at nearly 15 years old, but also quite impressive that the M1, a fraction of the size, easily outperforms it. It's about twice as fast doing stuff like renderings.

The main application I use is not yet "native" but seems to run just as well as it did on my old mac. I've had no more than the usual amount of migration pain. The main issue has been related to drivers not yet being quite ready but I have got nearly everything working fine now.

I was initially hesitant due to the two monitor limitation - but it turns out this is easily bypassed by using a displaylink adaptor. I have it happily running 3 monitors now.

I have an MBP M1. I was worried about the 1 monitor limitation - but when I plugged it into my existing adaptor, it seemed to fire up 2 monitors quite happily. I would never have known that there was meant to be a limitation if I had done less pre-sale research / dithering.

Quite liking the 1 cable pass through thing - plug it into the monitor and it starts recharging and also connects to a back up drive to do a time machine. Only thing is that I keep forgetting to eject the drive before unplugging - hope it isn't doing damage anywhere.
Appreciate the 1 USB cable thing may be old hat in the world of computing, but it is still new to me.

fingerprint ID is faultless.
Touch bar is kind of neat, but never remember to look at it when using the big monitor - so it is essentially a waste of time. Also confusing because they are dynamic. ie: the zoom leave / mute etc touch buttons are actually useful - but they disappear when on a call and you activate a window running a different app, so you may as well stick to the mouse if you want to mute on zoom or whatever
