Alan Moore

"In truth, the dialogue is shaky, frequently eroded by Moore's poor grasp of American vernacular" - I think this is a valid criticism - the Victorian dialogue in From Hell is kind of excruciating
Mm. Go and read The Crimson Petal and the White if you want some quality Victoriana, it occupies much the same niche as From Hell.

I'm reading From Hell at the mo and whilst I'm enjoying it, I don't think he's a terribly good writer.

Not everything Moore does is all that good but in general he is much better than most comic book writers. From hell is rubbish as is V for Vendetta in my opinion.

I like the way he twists 'boys own' style stories. Watchmen, tom strong and top 10 are pretty good. From Hell was a style of story I don't think Moore is so good at telling. I did like the second League jaunt with the war of the worlds story.

I've read LoG, which I thought was mediocre. I read some of Watchmen, but gave up cos it bored me and irritated me.

Hm, I do think he's vastly superior to the majority of comic book writers. Personally I prefer From Hell to V for Vendetta, which just leaves me cold for some reason - perhaps because I was too young to really remember Thatcher's Britain I can't empathise with it in the way many people can. Or perhaps it's because the artwork is a load of old cock. League starts well, with a nice revisionist Boy's-Own-style adventure, but gradually disappears further and further up the arse of its own literary conceit with each new volume. Haven't read Lost Girls, Top 10 or Tom Strong, and I'm about to start on his only prose work, Voice of the Fire.

Watchmen's bloody brilliant, though - every re-reading reveals some new detail hidden away.

Actually, one of the most interesting things I've read recently was a review of Lost Girls by Michel Faber. Since Faber wrote my favourite book ever ever, The Crimson Petal and the White, it was entertaining to read him actually criticise Moore's writing. There's been so much slavish adulation from comics fanboys directed at Moore, it was refreshing to read someone who's willing to point out the flaws.

That's really interesting. I really like Faber. I think his prose and is beautiful, but I think he has problems with plots. I thought his Under the Skin was amazing and I prefer it to The Crimson Pedal. It's mostly a mood piece about a female alien being who roams the Scottish Highlands with sinister purpose.

Mmm, I've read it. Still prefer TCPaTW. Though the trick of the aborted ending was rather spoilt when he released The Apple, which explains What Happened Next.

I nearly went to see him give a talk at my local museum, but couldn't get a ticket. I also nearly went to the signing he did the other day but couldn't be arsed travelling.

So in short, I fail at being a fanboy

From Hell is one of the best graphic novels ever written you damn fool! It's the one I lend people when I want to convert them to the genre and it hasn't failed yet.

I think perhaps From Hell is for people who aren't into superheroes.
