Actors who have a go at directing (themselves in) turkeys

That looks bloody awful...
:D

I like George Clooney as a film star, but I find his films as a director deadly dull. I lost the will to live during Monuments Men.

Even Clooney admits Monument Men was a stinker. Good Night and Good Luck is excellent.

Eastwoods' worst film is Hamburger Hill a justification for US interference in Latin America. Unforgiven, play misty for me, Bridges of Madison County, Any which way but loose, and Birdy all outstanding.

Jodie Fosters little man Tate is excellent. Julie Delphy has made a couple of decent Indy films with a before sunrise vibe. Tim Robbins dead man walking is excellent. Stallone did Rocky. Ron Howard is one of the best directors working in Hollywood. Oldman and Tim Roth have made excellent grim films ( nil by mouth and the war zone)

If we talk about more great films made by actors, I think The Night of the Hunter by Charles Laughton should come out tops. Now considered a classic, it was not well received in its day and remained the only film he ever directed.

Bird, not Birdy.

Clint Eastwood didn't do Hamburger Hill!

He did, however, do 'Heartbreak Ridge', a bold tale of the might of the US Army taking on the sleepy island of Grenada (pop. 110,000) and triumphing!

And he did do 'American Sniper' where the concept of killing brown people from a safe distance is given the US seal of approval.

He was OK as a cowboy, though....

I find Eastwood hugely overrated as a director. He gets praised for his no fuss, classical style, but I often find his films outrageously manipulative and melodramatic. Million Dollar Baby and Mystic River were shameless and I found them inadvertently comical, but critics fawned over them.

I always get Hamburger Hill and HeartBreak Ridge mixed up ( Hanburger Hill is DePalma who I hate)

Yeah the glorification of Grenada and Eastwood as the grisled Vietnam vet getting his rag tag misfits in shape to defeat all four members of the Grenada army.

Ugh I was going off the top of my head. Hunter is one of my all time favourite films.

There are loads of great actors turned directors in fact it's one path for women who want to direct (still far too few women directors in the world) lots of actress' turn directors.

Sarah Polley deserves a special mention there. I thought Stories We Tell was fantastic.

I found that pretty boring as well, but it was well received.

I've not seen it in years. It was a politically astute film, coming at time when the press was being bullied to support a government pushing through the patriot act and the Iraq war.

But you are right leather heads is awful as is Monument Men (which considering the cast is shockingly bad) that leaves welcome to colinwood which I've seen but can't remember a single thing about it, and the idea of March (never saw it)

I was just thinking of her but couldn't remember her name, disgustingly talented, gorgeous and at the start of what could be a fantastic career

WBD

(worthy but dull)

I would speculate that's where monument men fell down. It's a terrific comedy ensemble cast and the premise is fantastic (going into a war zone to rescue art) for a very funny film (mash meets love joy if you will) but I think he didn't want to be "disrespectful" to the story and so you are left with this meandering confused shambles

Clooney as a director is similar to Robert Redford. Both are charismatic movie stars, very politically engaged and they direct films which tend to be politely received and which for all their good intentions and good taste leave me cold (and asleep)

The Milagro Beanfield War's title is so offputting, I could never get round to watching it.

1st contact is easily the best next gen film (mind you it's not like there's stiff competition)

Drakes directed the live action thunderbirds movie now that was a big ball of shite

That wasn't poorly received at all, it's considered one of the best ST films and I think it's the best after Wrath of Khan.

Back on topic: Mel Gibson ! Braveheart and Passion of the Christ are both seriously shit.

I remember all my friends cussing it at the time, I have little critical judgement when it comes to sci fi films.I enjoy em all- its the one where they go back in time and save the inventor of the warp drive.

not sure what involvement he had with Insurrection but people diss that one as well, me, I'm sold the minute the score swells in and captain picard appears.
