Nail shops are soooo last year.
a traditional ironmongers, selling nails and so much else, wouldn't be so bad.

I do believe that she is local and a woman of colour. she has the support of anita, owner of diverse, and that's good enough for me!

There used to be a similar kind of shop a little way up the road. I don't think it's still there.

I remember him, he was class. I was on Kellet Road and bought a lot of crap off him like power boards, UHF cable. Having been living in Dublin until then, I wasn't familiar with Poundland or 99p stores. When I did find them I realised most of Mr Bigg's £2.50 stock was available for a quid round there.

A charming chancer. Mr Bigg's shop, incorporating Mr Bigg property management, Mr Bigg wedding video and Mr Bigg beauty services. I wish I could find his card again.

editor, I know you won't like this, but I think you'll find that that stretch of Atlantic Road-Railton Road is now more commonly referred to as The Old Frontline. I started noticing this around the time that the Frontline off-licence changed its name.

I was a bit sad about it for a while, but then I realised that it would make me sad and annoyed to hear incomers talking about The Frontline when they had no knowledge or connection to it at all. It's the old frontline now. And that's not altogether a bad thing: frontlines are in warzones, and peace is not a bad thing.

I only described it thus in a quest for alliteration!

It's only alliteration if there's some spacial or connection between the words, you know:

Burgeoning Brixton's first Frontline florist, for instance

But you've got the words so far apart, how can I see your intentions!

And sort out that missing apostrophe, man!

I was going to do a different title that had lots of F's in it, but gave up.

i've heard various reasons as the name "front line" - why is it called line? is it the frontline of a border, or, as is them common explanation i have heard, the front line of drugs/gangs, etc?

I understood frontline on railton road was the name of the shop. When the identity of the shop is known to everyone so it needs no explanation - other examples are Buddys on Sydney road, Jacks in Stockwell and Franks on Brixton road.

Well, the new flower shop opened today, wish I'd taken my camera as it looks lovely. The florist grew up in Brixton and has a brother who been's running a business here for years. Bought a beautiful white/green hydrangea, not sure how long it'll last tho' cos the cat like to munch the leaves. If you haven't already, go in and say hello, the woman's name is Mills, and she's very friendly. Unlike the snooty cow in the wine tasting shop opposite.

It's called vessel, isn't it? Saw her putting signs on the windows yesterday.

BigMoaner It was the frontline in the "war" between the police and local people. It's where the majority of confrontational stuff happened during the 1981 riot/uprising.
The police use it in other areas of London that were/are particularly dangerous or out of their control. Sandringham Road in Hackney was known as the frontline by cops and locals alike though I don't think there were any particularly notable riots there.
