1p mobile- what's the catch?

1p mobile are a MNVO on EE. As the name suggests, they charge 1p a minute, 1p a text, 1p a megabyte.

There's going to be a catch at that price, obviously. Before I go trawling through reams of small print, does anyone know what it is?

Looks OK if you really don't use your phone much at all but will get pricey if you do - might be worth checking your current usage to see what it'd cost with these guys.

Seems there is a minimum topup of a tenner every 3 months which is fair enough but something to consider.

But sim only deals are getting very cheap at the moment so shop around, Plusnet are currently doing unlimited calls, unlimited texts + 500mb data for £6 a month on a 30 day contract for example.

Loads of good deals on UK hot deals.

It doesn't strike me as that cheap in these days of unlimited packages. That's a tenner a gig, which is actually pretty pricey. Can see how it could be good though if you don't use a phone much.

Looking to save some cash to be honest.

My intention is to stick the smartphone in a drawer and go back to a Nokia 100 or similar. My bill on 1p mobile, in theory, would pretty much never be more than a fiver a month and some months literally pence.

Seems like a good deal if you're some kind of grandad who doesn't use a mobile all that much and even then keeps it purely to voice and texts. iD may be better for you though if do anymore more than light voice/texts in a month. I'd advise to keep it purely to a non smartphone. Read more here:

1p Mobile: everything you need to know

Principally you need to be aware that 1p Mobile’s deals seem designed for light users. Or perhaps older phone users who don’t make much use of data and mostly just text and make calls.

If you’re even a moderate data user, we think you’re probably better off with a cheap SIM only deal. There are plenty about, after all.

By way of example, with data priced 1p per MB a single gigabtye of data will cost you £10. That’s on top of any calls and texts you use.

At the time of writing, iD Mobile is offering a rolling-contract SIM only deal priced £5 per month. That buys you 1.5GB of data per month, plus 5,000 texts and 250 minutes per month.

You also need to top up every 120 days.

Once you’ve joined for £10, as long as you top up every 120 days you’ll retain all your credit and keep your account active. There’s no minimum top-up.

ETA - above it says there's no minimum top up but their own site says you have to top up £10 every 120 days. UKs cheapest PAYG mobile tariff

Think I'm going to sign up with these folk when my contract ends next. Not the cheapest of these networks that resell others, but still a good price. One of the few that have access to all EEs wavelengths. I've been with 3 and Vodaphone since I left EE and neither are as good really. If I still worked out in the sticks a lot more I'd just pay for EE, expensive as they are, but these seem worth a go. Like the idea of a 30 day contact as well as I don't need to replace my phone yet, but I know if I sign up for a 12 month one, it will break the week after.

Any horror stories before I do so?

We have a spare phone, a cheap Nokia with a 1p mobile SIM in it for emergencies, those times you don't want to take your smartphone etc.

We buy the One Year SIM deal and leave it in the gloves box usually for 'just in case'

It has been fine, but it has been mainly used for calls and texts rather than using the data.

We have very good ee signal round here too.

The esim thing is a bit of a fucker as my Pixel doesn't have two physical sim card slots, guess I'll have to be careful not to loose the main one if I go on holiday. But full EE for a tenner a month seems worth it.

Aye, Giffgaff and Lyca do eSims, as well as the big 4, don't think any other mvno's do them yet

No, but you get buttons to play or delete or save or share the audio, rather than having to respond to irksome voice menus.

Hardly worth paying EE £20 a month, though.

We had our house mobile on 1p Mobile for many years. Great website to control your account/SIM. Topping up £10 every 120 days minimum is/was OK except for a year when they decided existing customers must have a minimum spend of £2.50 every 30 days or they'd just take the difference - being light users (around 140 mins) I was used to building up credit and doing a charity SMS donation. Anyway, the minimum spend thing stopped being applied to the account.

I moved the house mobile to RWG a few months ago. £20 (edit: now £30) one-off payment gives a year of 250 mins, 250 SMS and 2GB data per month. We have both personal mobiles on RWG free forever 50 min, 50 SMS, 250MB per month (deal no longer available).

Throbbing Angel - RWG uses EE network. You could buy their £1 credit SIM for your emergency phone. Credit never expires, just make a call or text every 90(?) days. The credit is used PAYG 5p/min, 5p/SMS 1p/MB. i.e. 20 mins of emergency calls. This month they're doubling top-ups. You could top up £5 and get £10 credit (200 mins). I did this today and it all shows when I do a balance check from the phone.

Unlike 1p Mobile, RWG web site account control is pants/non-existent but their email/phone support is fine.

Been testing this the last few days with both Vodaphone and 1pmobile/EE sims in my phone.

Just got 270Mbps on EE vs 180Mbps on Vodaphone at home. So not really an important difference. However I'm working in Glossop a fair bit at the moment at the difference is far more useful 50 vs 4.

It was broadly my experience when I was on EE proper that they're better in more remote areas. I'm not remote enough anymore in justify the extra cost, but it's nice to save a bit of money each month and get access to their network.

Had a message or email (can't remember) about 1p mobile moving from 120 days between minimum £10 top-ups to 90 days.

FYI PSA etc

Ah - here it is:

Our terms and conditions are changing

We are writing to advise you that we will shortly be changing the terms and conditions of your 1pMobile service as set out below; these changes became effective on 08 February 2024, however, due to you adding your last top-up under the old conditions we thought it only fair to delay implementing these changes for you until your next top-up due date on 25 March 2024. I.e. From you next top-up due date 25 March 2024, your first 90-day usage period and spend requirment will automatically start, unless you top-up beforehand or switch to one of our great value Boosts.

Please note that there is no change to our core pricing of 1p/minute, 1p/text, and 1p/MB.

Summary of the key change we are making
We are replacing the requirement to top-up your 1pMobile account with a minimum of at least £10 every 120-days, with a new minimum spend requirement of £10 every 90 days.

To implement this change, we have updated our full terms which you will find below:

At £3.33 a month it is in effect starting to enter Lebara territory where you get unlimited texts plus 3GB and 300 minutes for about £4.50 or so.

Yeah - I'm going back to Lebara or similar when this Vodafone contract ends in October. I got such a good deal (free £300+ Pixel Watch and £220 trade-in for a phone worth about £50 at the time) that it made sense to go contract rather than buy the phone outright and carry on w/Lebara.

MrsA and lil'Angel are out of contract atm so they may be going Lebara too this month.

Interested to see another new-ish player on the MSE Sim Only page - never heard of SPUSU before. They do 5G, WiFi calling and free EU roaming in 38 countries at present. Based in Austria. Uses EE network.

SPUSU looked pretty astonishing. I moved the rest of the family to Lebara a while back and have had no complaints. On a legacy 02 SIM 50GB unlimited texts and calls for £7 a month which seems reasonable.

And they do eSIMs which is a bonus (in my case, my phone can take one physical and one e SIM)

Bought the wrong dumbphone yesterday for the glovebox (got a 2g phone in error)
Was going to return it to Argos
Thought I'd email RWG before I did that

Had this from 1p Mobile earlier - they're shortening the time between £10 top ups to 60 days.

It was 120 days when I got the SIM card :( Then 90 days.....
Not that this is a massive problem for me personally, but it brings them closer to the norm/other providers for many, especially those that need or want a cheap SIM for whatever reason. I gave mine to me Da when his phone was on the blink and stuck a bullseye on it so he had a reliable EE signal that he could use whenever for calls/texts without worrying about cost. Older people seem to worry about call costs more and are less likely to have Bundles or whatever because they see it as paying for stuff they haven't used or something

Anyway - 1pm mobile - effectively more expensive/ £ wasted if you don't use the credit.

We had our house mobile on 1P Mobile. £10 every 120 days was OK. We built up credit and when it got to a suitable amount after a year of so I did a charity donation by SMS for £5 or £10.

They then started changing Ts & Cs like minimum £2.50/month spend for existing customers only, and they took any spare credit up to the £2.50. Irritating.

On the plus side, their web portal was great, fully itemised history etc.
