Self-indulgent pet thread

The Mull seemed a bit reluctant on her walk yesterday. Can't think why?

Bit of drama this weekend. Dave from Ferret Help phones up and apparently someone was trying to take a ferret as hand luggage on a plane from Luton Airport. The airport weren't having it, so the airport were phoning round the nearby (ish) rescues to see if anyone would take the ferret. To cut a long story short we are now looking after another ferret. His name is Popeye and he's the sweetest little kit you could ever meet. So sweet he is like a bundle of black, white and yellow sugar. Four months old.

He was got for a little girl with mental health issues whose family have now gone back to Bulgaria for good. I suppose they thought he might classify as a helping ferret like a guide dog for the blind. He arrived here in a little carry cage with a drawing of hearts and a bubble with the words, "I love you, Popeye." :( They are trying to work out a way to get him transported to Bulgaria.

I've got to say I'm impressed by the customer service at the airport.

Photos to follow. And I still owe you all photos for the last rescue kit. I haven't forgotten.

Here's some pictuers of Jorvick (sorry about the poor quality):

Jorvick's story is here. He's quite a sad ferret. Really scared of other ferrets and quite possibly narcoleptic. He gets stressed and then goes to sleep (note that's why he is asleep in these photos). On the other hand he really loves walks in the park and gallops alonside me following, constantly monitoring where I am about to go. He's also very cuddly. Looking for a home without other ferrets...

Popeye and Jorvick look set to have a great friendship, though. Popeye is a very good natured kit and Jorvick is no trouble maker. With a bit of luck Popeye will bring out the playful kit in Jorvy. Jorvy is less than a year old but doesn't act like a kit. :(

Do hope Popeye will get back to his little girl in Bulgaria, though. She must be heartbroken. Trying to get in touch with them via email...

Yup, that's a ragdoll. So likely to get bullied by the squirrels round here....

I thought it looked like a ragdoll kitten, they are sweet cats. Not necessarily submissive with the wildlife mind you (they are cats afterall!) - but they make very nice pets. I hope you have gone with a good breeder who will keep the kittens for an appropriate amount of time - I got my Oriental at 13 weeks and he's absolutely perfect, came to me well socialised and litter trained and he's very bonded to me. Silly question I know, any GCCF registered breeder has to stick to the 13 week rule.

Yes, mate of mine who's a vet found him for us- the breeder brings them all to her for injections etc and she said he was the nicest. That's why I am having to wait- I want him now!!!

He'll be learning what is appropriate behaviour in terms of biting and scratching, little kittens play really rough and learn the boundaries best while they are with their mum and siblings - if you take them away too young they are not so good as pets because they haven't learned that biting and scratching hurt, if you leave them a bit longer they have an aversion to it because they were with their mum long enough for her to tell them NO! and tell them off in dam-kitten terms, something that cannot be replicated by human contact. TBH the 13 week rule is due to vaccinations, it's prohibited to rehome any unvaccinated kitten or any who have been vaccinated in the last 7 days - and vaccinations happen at 9 weeks with a booster at 12 weeks - so 13 weeks is the earliest they can be rehomed under GCCF rules, but it works for everyones benefit, and you get a better socialised pet as a result. Breeders who do Cornish Rex and similar breeds often won't let their kittens go to a new home until they are 16 weeks or older, because they need a bit longer with their mother than other breeds.

It's worth the wait.

And then she'll find somewhere to sleep that's far enough down to be away from stroking hands, but far enough up that she gets a decent body heat updraft from Artichoke n me :D
