how to improve brixton - not an anti-"gentrification" thread, honest!

The parkies in Windmill Gardens have begun mowing the long grass. However, until they complete the job, my little pooch will continue to run into the longer sections on her morning walk. This causes her to become moistened by the dew, requiring a rub down when indoors.

So, come on, Lambeth Council. Stop areas of the gardens being a "mow-go" for Millie!

I think Lambeth should be applauded for promoting a wide range of habitat experiences for urban "companion animals".

I'd like to see more cycle lanes around Brixton.Actually i'd like to see any cycle lanes in Brixton.I cycle all over London and i think Brixton is one of the most tricky areas to ride around.I wouldn't say its dangerous place to cycle but with 3-4 lanes of traffic on either side of St Matthews it can be quite miserable trying to get in the right lane at times.

More cycle lanes

I second that! Tulse Hill, for example, has a massive wide pavement on both sides. The surface is literally falling apart and looks totally shit. One of the things I have been meaning to do is to suggest to the council that an off-road cycle lane be created on Tulse Hill together with lighting, trees and other environmental improvements to make that stretch of road feel safer, esp for women and kids walking home at night.

While we're on the subject, the AGM of the Brixton Forum is this Thursday at 7pm where future improvements (like this) to Brixton will be discussed. There is a thread on it here

I'd like to see a GAP, a Starbucks, another McD's and another KFC at the other end of the highstreet. A Burger King would be good and perhaps Nestle to relocate their offices here.

And more estate agents. And a Slug and Lettuce.

Oops, just seen Mr Retro has already suggested this.

There should be one at either end of the High Street though.

And I suppose somewhere that sells foie gras is completely out of the question?

Oh, and a Cafe Rouge.
You've got one of those up your way in uber-posh West Dulwich. :p :p

I had my wedding breakfast there, eight years ago tomorrow.

I'd like to see Electric Ave regenerated, not gentrified -- ie assistance for existing businesses to do up their shopfronts, redoing the terrible pavements and locating, restoring and reinstalling the beautiful cast iron canopies.

and a fancy sarnie shop wouldn't go amiss either :D
Pret? Should especially be encouraged as it is half owned by those nice McDonalds people. Perhaps Brixton should be rebranded as McDTown?

I'd like to see Brixton Road, between the station and the KFC/CHL Corner completely pedestrianised and the traffic routed around. Or under. Or somewhere.

I'd love to see the top part of coldharbour lane from pedestrianised. Or at least for cars to be prevented from parking there. Its far too narrow for the weight of traffic that uses it.

a threshers would be nice... or somewhere other than sainsburys to buy decent wine... wonder why nobodys ever set one up?

Probably wouldn't make any difference to me, being the fussy eater that I am, so Pret can shove it  :D

There's a good argument for pedestrianising the whole kit and caboodle, including the above, Electric Ave, Electric lane and Rushcroft Road, except for necessary access traffic. This would mean a cohesive, intelligent landscape architecture scheme could be applied to the whole area. That's regeneration, fluffybottom, as Alan B'stard might say.

I think they should chop down that great big tree in front of the Ritzy so you can see what's on at the cinema.
Make McDonald's bigger, you can barely fit all the people in there who want to be in there.
Stop pedestrians from walkng down the highstreet - they can use the maze of arcades, and add another lane of traffic. This will allow more traffic to move through Brixton so making it even more 'scuzzy' and 'edgy'.
More Blandishments as it's lovely to see Brixton becoming more like Croydon and Norwood Junction...

when i worked for oddbins, a member of their property department described brixton as 'not our sort of people'.

the victoria wine at stockwell closed down because it was robbed and staff assaulted too many times.

the wine shop that used to exist across the road from o cantinho (a long time ago) was run by old black guys who were really nice and sold half-decent wine - better than most offies anyway - but they used to man the shop with at least 2 behind the counter, 1 on the door and 2-3 in the middle of the shop (the place was tiny, btw) because of all the shoplifting and robberies. they eventually closed down. (or did the place burn or am i just imagining that?)

anyway, there's m&s, tesco and sainsbury now and they all sell better/cheaper wine than most small oddbins/thresher/viccy wine. imo

i used to work at an off-licence in herne hill, closed down now cos of all the robberies etc. and also cos they couldn't find any staff that didn't nick from em!
