French magazine publishes controversial cartoons of Prophet Muhammad - many killed in revenge attack

because there are no updates do we turn this thread into a load of half arsed, insensitive piffle..........

I'm going to say 'probably yes'.

It's not humanity's way to remain in a state of desperation for long.

It's not disrespectful to be amused or bewildered by turns. I don't imagine that the satirists who died would have expected us to put that satirical tendency aside.

I'd like a discussion about whether the widespread sharing of Mohammed cartoons and CH front covers (on social media and by the traditional print media on today's front covers) is the right response to the tragedy. Would a new thread be appropriate, do you think?
Go for it.

great that we have you here to speak for humanity

can we have a new thread on which we discuss the martyrdom of the creators of half arsed, insensitive piffle comics.......

edited because I can't spell

The French Council of the Muslim Faith has called on Muslims in France to take in part in demonstrations against the Charlie Hebdo attack planned for this weekend.

Significant development?

from guardian update

The remaining Hebdo staff say they're bringing out next weeks issue no matter what.

Also of significance, Hollande has requested a meeting with Le Pen.
Is this the stuff that was reported yesterday where he's meeting the leaders of all the parties? Or something else?

I am not afraid of reprisals, I have no children, no wife, no car, no debt. It might sound a bit pompous, but I'd prefer to die on my feet rather than living on my knees"

More sensitive?

from 'Nintendocafe'
what is this and how are people meant to understand it?
please provide links and calm down a bit

Yes. I suspect you're the man to start it.

I think it'd be an interesting thread. Like these t-shirts. I'd like to wear one but baulk at the commercialising of this and don't know if I'd have the nuts to wear it in London, tbh. It comes down to the same thing as satirical magazines; is it freedom of expression or reckless goading?

I shall have a look and report back after my computer has finished updating. Either way it's a large step towards elite level normalisation.

I dunno, I got the impression we might be getting led into the 'they deserved shooting territory'.
