Cheapish Personal Trainer Recommendation??

welcome to urban :D

most gyms will do you a program when you join. try doing that and sticking to it and then getting regularly reassessed.

there is nothing decadent about doing this, it is your fitness, do what works for you.

although walking more is the best advice as well.

Of all the forms of exercise I've tried, joining a gym and following the same program on the same machines has got to be the dullest way of trying to get fit. Not exactly suited for someone who describes themselves as lazy...hell gyms take on far more members cos they have capacity for as they know how many will stop going.

At least a personal trainer could mix things up and keep it interesting. Well I assume they could as I've never used one.

yeah fair point. although i was thinking of ££ really, you can balance sessions on your own with a trainer changing things up for you.

They're not cheap though. Personal trainers usually cost £50/£60 hour and go up to £150 an hour.

Nope I did that and your first posts were fairly negative, "decadent" was bandied round.

Try not to make everyfuckingthing a class issue

Personal Trainers really are a truly decadent invention: you're paying someone to make you get off your arse because you can't be bothered to do it yourself.

They're not just about getting someone to shout at you to get off the couch, they can show you where you're going wrong with technique in various exercises, show you when you're pushing parts of your body too hard, when you're not pushing hard enough, help you avoid injury and if you're short of time they can help you get the most from your workout.

Yes. 'Decadent' as in a response to the opening post where the person declared themselves too "lazy" to get off their "lardarse" and do anything for themselves.

Not sure where class comes into that, neither am I sure why I have to put up with your foul abuse.

And my posts weren't all 'negative' either. I actually offered some very good advice.

You said 'personal trainers are a truly decadent invention'.

Phrased like that I'd say it lays your class-based position clearly on the table.

Shame you didn't pick up a dictionary from this 'table' and read it. A common use for the word 'decadent' is to mean "luxuriously self-indulgent," and that was my response to the OP's 'too lazy to get off their lardarse' comment.

Wriggling with meaning no. 7 in the dictionary isn't going to help. ;)

'Decadent invention'. Not an invention that can be used decadently. A decadent invention.

Not a bad effort, though.

Whatever. I know what I meant, thanks. I think maybe you need to get a new dictionary too because it's making your pedantic 'arguments' look a little desperate.

Ah, great. A new debating tack to replace the last misfiring number.

We all know what you meant.

Personal trainers are a truly decadent invention.

You meant 'luxurious'. Makes perfect sense now I think about it, yes indeedy.

Oh, you're back on this again, now with added selective quoting. Marvellous stuff.

Bored now. You do need to get a better dictionary though.

Ok, ok. So you meant luxuriant.

You were criticising the luxuriant tastes of this upstart oik.
It's your prerogative as a web tycoon, I get it; why so sensitive?

Jeeesus, wasn't expecting to come back to see all this. I suppose I should clarify first that actually this isn't just down to laziness despite what I first wrote. It's due to a severe lack of motivation due to suffering from depression on and off for a few years. But I didn't want to say that initially bit feel I have to now due to the flaming from a cettain other on here. I only came on to seek some help so there was really no need to be so damn rude. Decadent for some maybe but I know myself and I know I need help and it took some courage to come on here and ask for advice as the first step. And no, I'm not rich, I'm broke but I saved a little from my birthday money and my mum gave me £50 to put towards it.
Oh and I walk everywhere but it's not enough. So please don't be so judgemental in future.
Thankyou to everyone else for the helpful suggestions, it's much appreciated.

If only you'd said that at the start!

Please accept my apologies for my previous comments.

Pippa - another option for you to consider is spin classes at the Rec (they call it aerobiking). There are other classes too as have been mentioned. Full membership is £40 a month (cheaper than a trainer) although you can try out classes as a casual user.

Do you have any mates that would be willing to do this with you? Quite a few personal trainers will offer a rate for 2/3 people that's usually only a few quid more than their one-to-one rate - might bring the price down a bit once you find a trainer, and mean you can have a few more sessions.

But surely by seeking to get a personal trainer they are at least taking some sort of pro-active approach? Clearly not actually 'too lazy to get off their lardarse', just could do with a helping hand to stay off their lardarse. As has been said, a personal trainer can fulfil a range of requirements, and one of those can be helping motivate someone who perhaps isn't great at motivating themselves (and I speak as one of those people). Self-motivation is a skill just like anything else in life, and we're not all born with the innate ability.

I really don't think a personal trainer is "decadant" - as has been said, alongside being able to give motivation they (hopefully!) bring a level of understanding and expertise that the average joe wouldn't have. In a way it's like going to an evening class for any skill, where you get taught how to be better at something, and advice on where you might be going wrong and how to improve.

Are running and training groups also "decadant"? It's a similar thing of having people there to help keep you going when your own motivation may be lagging, and also to keep things more interesting (I stopped going to the gym because I found it so bloody dull).

Anyway, I don't think someone has to disclose they've suffered from depression to 'justify' wanting to get a personal trainer.

The only problem I do have with personal trainers is how much they charge, but that's just a personal thing and we all have our ideas of what things are worth.
