3 Billion to revamp Parliament

It may be iconic, but the silly money being quoted is unjustifiable in the current climate - given that it is only a building. Nothing lasts forever, and you can't preserve things whatever the cost.

It's a whole lot more than just iconic and it's a whole lot more only a building. Of course it is worth preserving.

Strap them all to Rockall and then nuke it. 1 missile should suffice, with minimal collateral damage.

Just nuke the old building at the opening of parliament. It'd take about 10 years for the rads to die down but we'd solve a lot of problems and eventually we'd have a greenfield site we could either build on or profit from tourist dollars from similar to Chernoybl.

Most of it is less than 200 years old. Icons change, and it's an icon of Eton-Oxbridge debating hall style politics that can fuck off. As Victorian gothic goes it's not bad though, can be kept as a tourist attraction.

Its a shit building to actually work in though and the whole debating chamber committee rooms are crap for purpose.
Your talking a dozen hospitals at least possibly more to simply put it back together.

Unfortunatly tube train packed with explosives isnt going turn up anytime soon.

Even when it was built it was somewhat outdated... And then the towers that were intended to ventilate the building were blocked off for extra rooms iirc. It must be a nightmare to heat the place, provide proper lighting etc.

If the place really has to be done up, then they should take the opportunity to turn the Commons into a proper debating chamber instead of the schoolboy, confrontational arrangement we have at the moment. Semi-circular, proper seats, electronic voting instead of all the trooping in and out, etc.

There's far too much consensus in British politics as it is without trying to engineer it into the architecture. There's noting wrong with shouting across the floor at the class enemy. As for electronic voting, there is a risk that this will give an excuse for keeping MP's voting records secret

Erm, it's about time we took the class system out of it.

But if you replace it with something modern, you'll get an anodyne steel & glass & concrete monstrosity that won't last.

Scottish Parliament Building

If they had to build a new parliament building, where would it go? The only "empty" plots nearby are Horseguards Parade and Victoria Tower Gardens, neither of which are really big enough.

Outside of London. There's loads of space elsewhere in the UK, and it would be far cheaper. About time things were moved out of London - for the sake of the rest of the country.

I'd say 'not bad' is an understatement. I've no problem with it being kept as a tourist attraction along the lines of Versailles perhaps and Parliament moving to a new site, but the repairs would then still have to be done and together with the new building the cost would be astronomical.

Might as well repair it and let Parliament stay there. It's the people inside who need to change, not the building.

I'd hate it to end up like County Hall... sold off and still largely empty.

Why are you attached to it? It's a manifestation of the Victorian Imperial parliamentary system, one which we could do with finally getting rid of. Most of the building - offices, meeting rooms, service areas etc - are of no interest to the public and could be mothballed. Most of the plant would be unnecessary and running costs, ongoing maintenance etc would be reduced. It's a stupid place for a parliament to work really. Fine for the ceremonial stuff, but not to actually work in.

The Colosseum, St. Peters and the Parthenon are manifestations of imperialism as well and Westminster is up there with them in my humble opinion. The interior detailing is astonishing. By all means move Parliament, but the Palace and Hall need preserving.

Aren't two of them ruins? We could make it three by letting Parliament fall apart unoccupied.

I didn't say demolish it, just keep the more attractive interiors as places people can visit and mothball the rest.

No. Their building needs to change (assuming there'll be a bit of time yet before we fuck this system off altogether). Part of being a cunt is having the trappings of cuntery. Putting them somewhere functional rather than grandiose would remove some bit of their self-importance. Not that it would ever happen voluntarily...

But keep the building. It's pretty. It does have lots of interesting history. Open it up. Let people use it.

proudless piece of shits.

This is the most iconic government building in human history. I'm fine with £3bn spent. It needs urgent repair and needs to be repaired.
