2 Arrests at Brixton Reclaim Your Food

A few weeks ago the religious nutters outside KFC on saturday had a model of a foetus on display as they were "right to lifers". Perhaps I should complain to cops about that being shown in a public place?

In my understanding there is no law against displaying a model of an unborn child, but if you suspect an offence by all means go and report it.

I couldn't wait to get stuck in. reckon you're just jealous you didn't get some....;)

I can assure you that the only pie of which I'm keen to partake is that which Mrs Untethered serves at dinner.

But as I said earlier, I see little harm in a public picnic per se, "vegan" or otherwise.

Thanks Ive had no reply yet. When i do ill post up.It would be good if others complained as Im sticking my head over the parapet doing this.

I've emailed Imogen Walker, a (lab) councillor here in Stockwell. She's on various police or crime committees.

No response yet...maybe I should email the lib-dems (the local opposition here) and demand a position statement?! They can have my vote if they lobby for weekly vegan picnics outside the Ritzy. Well strictly speaking, if they lobby for the right not to have the police make these decisions, but 'tis all one at this stage.

Is it 'cos she is a Christian?

Whatever, Lambeth's new Police Commander seems eager to hear from those she serves!
Lambeth is a vibrant borough so take the time out to dine in our restaurants, drink in our pubs and wine bars, have a fun family day out at the ice rink in Streatham and soak up the sun in one of our beautiful parks or go for a swim in the lido at Brockwell Park.

Please feel free to contact me with any thoughts, concerns or questions you have about the policing service in the borough. My office number is 0208 721 3502 or my email address: AskLambethBoroughCommander@met.police.uk

Well, I like fanny pie. And if the public were outraged, they wouldn't have been asking for a munch would they?

I read on these boards editor's almost daily (or nightly) problems with junkies on the Moorlands estate - that's a 3 minute walk up Coldharbour Lane - why aren't the police doing something about that instead of pissing about with a bunch of freegans doing something interesting and useful?

I think it's important to understand the relationship between people with serious drug problems and the police - the police use them as informants. It's pretty easy to manipulate someone in the cells who's clucking for their next hit.

It's also 'easier' than proper detective work and let's not forget that the Police are paid bonuses in their wages according to the # of arrests etc they make in a month.

The Police more or less admitted this in a Lambeth Police Consultative Group Committee meeting many years ago when locals were sounding off about why the Police never seemed to be doing anything about the sex-workers blatantly working on the street around Streatham/Balham. The Police said they didn't want to move them on as the info they gave to the Police was useful to them. i.e they want them for grassing.

I beleive the Free Food thing is going to continue every Sunday so if you didn't manage to get down there last Sunday, there's more opportunities we hope.

i was disgusted that the Jesus Army were outside KFC the day before Free Food on Sunday - they should have been hounded out of Brixton. Jesus Army are a cult who take vulnerable people - who they meet on the street - take them to their farm in Norfolk and then you can't leave.
They even had the guy who painted the Nuclear Dawn mural on Coldharbour Lane there and convinced him his art was evil and brainwashed him to stop making art.
I have met many people who have managed to escape the Jesus Army and they are very traumatised by the experience.
Next time I see them in Brixton we're going to have a go at them.

They are fucking slags and it's interesting that they are allowed to come into Brixton trawling for vulnerable people, but a few anarchists are threatened by the Police for handing out some free food.

Just got a reply from Kate Hoey saying she will 'certainly be asking for an explanation from the Police Commander'.
thanks Kate. :)

Uhhh, lots of people worked on that mural. As I recall, the main instigator ("DM") was a very tall lanky geezer who'd've eaten Jesus People for breakfast.

Are you sure of your facts here?

Just watched the video. Would have liked to have heard more (e.g. the first guy getting taken away) but on the face of it, seems way OTT.

Are there any more planned? Wouldn't mind popping along as an observer.

They seem to be every Sunday, last week's started about 4 o'clock.

Good food too! I had a nice bit of walnut cake.

There's a video here: http://indymedia.org.uk/media/2008/03//392934.mp4

The amount of cops on the scene looks ridiculous but there's no commentary explaining what's going on.

Oh hang on, This fucking idiot police woman is claiming that giving away free food was causing intentional alarm and distress (yep, that old CJA number).

I'm still none the wiser as to what the thing's about though.

Anything to do with this?

In spite of the weather, food not bombs put on another feast in b'ton today. It looks as if the police have down-scaled its response, as there were 6 police community support officers, none with cameras and all keeping a respectable distance. I'd like to think it's because they've taken on board the wide-spread community concerns about the questionable use of the law in this situation. It seems that the two arrested are not allowed to enter Brixton town centre, or the area covered by the dispersal zone, until after their court case in May. OTT doesn't even cover it...

There were more people there today who looked like they really needed the food. One guy said it wasn't just about the food, it was the spirit in which it was being given and the chance to mix with different people. Drug and alcohol mis/abuse should never be a reason for pushing people out of their communities - of course there's shit that goes along with certain life-styles, but still. And i speak as someone who has been directly affected by dealing and drug use, when my kid was younger and the back of our block was used by dealers and users for a couple of years.

Thanks for the info shygirl; I couldn't get down there yesterday, but I will try and come next week. Glad to hear that the police are backing down a bit.

A very good point.I dont like some of the religous nutters who preach in Brixton an Saturdays. The Korean Moonies are another cult. They were in evidence this weekend.

Ive no answer from my Councillors (whose ward this took place in) other the Rachel who said would take it up with police.Have you answer from Hoey?Id like the main parties in Lambeth to come up with a position on this use of Dispersal Zones and asbos. From what shygirl says the Police are using a "test case" to see if they can use a Dispersal Zone to get rid of political "undesirables" but not religous nutters:rolleyes:.

I assume,in my cynicism, that the Labour group will say its up to the courts to see if the law (there party introduced) can be used in this way.I wouldnt put it past the Labour group ,if the Police win the case, to wring there hands and argue its nothing to do with them.Like the arrest in Whitehall(those demonstrating without permission) were the Government said the police were being "over zealous".

Politicians bring in laws to deal with "Anti-social behaviour" and threat of terrorism.Civil libertarians warn them that they will be used in unintended ways. The Government ignores them. Then when they Police use them in this way they say its not there fault.

Am I getting to cynical here?

Once again it will be up to unelected Judiciary to defend our freedoms. As they have done in the past.

For all u libertarians out there I heard Jacqui Smith say she will not "pander to Guardian readers".

This is really useful info Shygirl:).If u get anything else keep us posted up.

I was on the Brixton Town Centre Safer Nighbourhood Panel last year when the police introduced the idea of dispersal zones.
At the time there was a lot of problems with dealers and addicts gathering at night on Rushcroft and Saltoun Roads particularly. The idea was to only use dispersal zone orders to move on a few people who had no other reason for loitering in purely residential streets in the early hours other than to sell drugs. The police gave reassurances that the application of the new powers would be focused on dealing with that specific drug dealing problem. It may be coincidence, but since then, the problems of dealing on certain streets in Brixton has got a lot better.
FYI, as far as I remember, there is a clause in the legislation that requires police to gather support from community representatives before they can use the dispersal act powers. Once invoked, community representatives have to approve the renewal of the dispersal powers every three months. If the community feel that the powers have been abused, then they can withdraw their permission for its use..... Just a thought.

The police are once again out in ludicrous numbers outside the Ritzy, with one taking pictures. There was also a police car with two cops parked opposite.

Fucking ridiculous.

I don’t understand any of this - not a thing; why the police are interested, why people want to give away food in London to people who have food, what ‘reclaim your food’ means, why everyone hasn’t got better things to do on a Sunday afternoon . . and prob a few more things
