X Men Apocalypse

DisMembered
So this is out in Cardiff this week. A very brief scan of reviews gives the impression that some of the critics are distinctly unimpressed. I shall probably get to watch it as part of my job at the weekend, one of the saving graces of what i do for a living. Anyway I'm a bit of a sucker for action/Sci fi/Fantasy movies, so call me easily pleased.

Anyway the primary reason for starting this thread is this tweet:

:D

Maybe if this one dies on its arse the franchise will get sold back to Disney/Marvel. Most of the current cast (Fassbender, McAvoy and Lawrence) are getting sick of the whole thing by all accounts.

I wished I as getting sick of a gig which pays that well.

See also: Don Cheadle doing very nearly nothing in all them Marvel movies then whining about it.

*Affects comedy Miles Davis voice* I directed a movie about Miles Davis man, I'm an artist.

it won't die on its arse, apocalypse is too classic an x men baddie for people not to watch. Plus we get baldy prof x now

My mate saw it yesterday and reckons it outdoes Days of Future Past (my favourite since X2) and the latest Captain America. Mind you, he rates Batman V Superman...

Civil War has set the bar surprisingly high. I was expecting that to be a big fat mess, and Apocalypse to get all the plaudits.

The previous Captain America film by the same team was one of the best received of the Marvel films so far, so I thought it would do well. I did think Apocalypse would get better reviews as Singer did it but these films are getting a bit samey (even by the samey standards of superhero films)

I really enjoyed this - for me X-Men the last few X-Men films have been even better than the Avengers movies, but they don't seem to be getting anywhere near as much love.

Hmm, found it a bit meh myself. I liked Nightcrawler and Quicksilver remains good. Sansa was pretty poor and it needed more Psylocke. Decent final fight.

Why, tho, would Magento decide the most sensible place to work would be a foundry? Seems rather unnecessarily risky.

I pretty much agree, though I think they could have done more with the life for mutants in the Warsaw Pact. We saw glimpses but they could have done so much more.

I really think they missed out on not having more Psylocke, if ever there is a character to be explored its Psylocke (and Black widow from the Avengers) though as her character is unresolved there could be something decent to come out later.

Found Magneto's appeal to god irritating. Could have been a decent two film script but just ended up rushed and not well executed. My wife almost left because of the knowingness of it all.

Verdict: meh. The pacing and general structure was way off, going from zero to end of the world basically out of nowhere. The villains were poorly served and even Apocalypse didn't have a lot to do, while Magneto has no proper motivation for either ending the world or for turning against Apocalypse. The bloke with the wings, that's just never going to be a cool superpower and trying to make him all menacing and stuff was a complete fail. Storm turns out to be good after all, but we don't know why because she only has about four lines in the whole movie. Striker turns up for no real reason other than to allow a Wolverine cameo, which was spoilered by the trailers and so had zero impact anyway.

Overall, possibly less good than X-men 3. The main problem was it just didn't seem to be about anything.

Agreed with the mehness, too much was glossed over for me and I just didn't really feel that it flowed well.

Perhaps people expect too much from the Marvel stable, perhaps I am way too easily pleased maybe both. It was ok Saturday afternoon entertainment for me but I wouldn't have paid to see it. I recognise the faults people have pointed out and even thought of one or two myself. I suppose my expectations weren't massively high to start out with.

I'm not sure I had high expectations. It wasn't dull or boring, it just didn't provide on the interesting storyline/characters/images front.

It actually just felt a bit like filler? Or a way to introduce new characters and a leadings for the next films or other films down the line.

I thought we already had the dark phoenix bits back when jean-luc was prof x. But its all changed now! I just don't know anymore. If anyone has a decent torrent for apocalypse send a PM cos I'm not paying at the cinema house but also I'm not watchin a cam version. No wait I've found one.

Singer set it up at the end of X2, but when Brett Ratner took over the third film he decided to go with a different main story and the whole Dark Phoenix saga got reduced to a minor subplot in X-Men 3
