LOSE IT
The other thread was pretty old. We are going to stay for one night this monday (coming back tuesday). It looks to me like train is best way get there from london, right? (other option would be hiring car.... but I figure as we are only there for a short time there will be enough within easy reach to fill time. Unless there is something up with trains that I haven't disovered? I wondered what the taxi/uber situation is like there?

We're staying kind of near JoJos restaurant, which was mentioned in old thread... is this still good? So we're not that close to the main harbour bit, which is the only bit I know. But it seems walkable?

Also want to go to Lobster Shack. We can get there earlyish on Monday, but can only check in at 3pm. Then check out at 11am. Won't have much luggage though. Could someone put together a good itinerary? 2 adults and 1 13-year-old.

I enjoyed a pleasant walk up and down the beach finishing with that rather pleasant pub that I can't remember the name of. Also wandering up and down the main street, but I'm easily pleased.

would have thought train would be easy enough, although there's a few bits of engineering work going on in to monday (more here) but these don't look too drastic.

depends how often you go places by train - travelling within the 'south east' (everything from the south coast as far north as places like bedford and milton keynes) there is 'network railcard', and there is a 'family railcard' as well - you pay up front for railcard for the year, then get discounts on journeys that fit the conditions. one trip like that probably wouldn't offset the up front cost on its own, but may be worth a look if you're going to make a habit of it.

doesn't look like it's big enough to have a taxi rank, but there's a taxi office on the north side of the station (street view here) - that is probably the side of the station you'd arrive at coming from london.

don't think i've ever been to whitstable, so can't recommend anything, but would have thought it would be open on a bank holiday monday.

if canterbury appeals (it has a cathedral and so on, and a museum where bagpuss lives) there's buses from whitstable to canterbury (stagecoach route 400) every 15 minutes weekday daytime - journey time about 45 minutes, fare will be on the government £ 2 fare scheme. there isn't a direct train service between the two, but for coming back (if you've bought a return to whitstable) you could just get singles from canterbury east to faversham, then the rest of the journey back to london would be covered by a return from whitstable.
