When the Monty Python All Stars played at Dulwich Hamlet in 1977

Really chuffed to be able to tell the full story of how Monty Python and a host of football and TV stars ended up playing a charity match at the old Champion Hill!

Superb stuff. Terry Jones used to live on Grove Park, off Camberwell Grove. Just by the entrance to Lettsom Gardens. Michael Palin in his diaries writes about how he used to head up to his house to write. On the 12 bus i recall which extended to Gospel Oak at the time.

The 12 never went to Gospel Oak, it went west from Oxford Circus to Harlesden via Notting Hill and Shepherd's Bush. It would have been the 3 from Herne Hill, or a combination of the two, changing in the West End. (Parliament Hill Fields was the destination on the blinds, which is adjacent to Gospel Oak Station.) I'm sure Palin has also recalled the two of them sometimes meeting at the Phoenix in Denmark Hill Station.

This new article solves the mystery of the Pythons' opponents. It was Horniman Primary School Parents & Teachers! With the kits borrowed from Carshalton Athletic, I'm guessing the Pythons are playing in their maroon and white home kit of the time, with Horniman in whatever was the away kit.

Ah right. So not the 12 then I read his diaries years ago, but must have remembered that incorrectly.

Or he got it wrong in the first place! I'm a bit of a London bus anorak, but that's probably a bit too parochial for someone who's spent years travelling to almost every nation on the planet.

There is a Carshalton FC, a very historic team who went down the AFA route in 1907 and still play AFA. They wear green from memory, it could be their kit.
