when did you decide 'no more camping'.

Got a fuck off huge Vango astoria 800, inc fleece carpets and fairy lights. Great and the kids love it.

Altho' the last trip to a windswept hill in Derbyshire in a storm where Mrs Butcher packed the wrong poles was *ahem* challenging....

I'm 40 and have been secretly wishing for the day when my soon to be born child is old enough to go camping with me because my wife won't even entertain the idea.

In between tents atm. The 7 man wild Country polyester dome had its last outing last summer after 8 loyal years. Was under £300 new, and saw us through at least a dozen long trips in usually shit weather. It got a final good summer last year and into retirement.

Not sure what to get next. We are going to camp in the south of France in August but have reserved a hire tent. Not done warm weather camping really so taking the easy option.

Medium term I fancy one of those Dutch canvas ones. That's kind of a long term ambition though as they cost deep in the purse.

Our first of the year is next month, can't bloody wait!
Us too. We can't decide whether to stay local for a couple of nights (Tom's Field in the purbecks) or be brave and go to Cornwall. We'd be taking the dogs again so it's more of an arse to come home if they're being dicks.

How do you 'retire' a tent? Erect it in a field, then move it every three or four days to keep the grass fresh? I think I'll start a tent retirement site... you bring your old faithful tents there, pitch them up... and come and visit when you can... or... I could just send an annual memorial photo. How about £10 per annum.

You permanently lend it to a family with 3 young boys to be destroyed over a single holiday.

My mum just got rid of her camper van :(

She just turned 70 and says she can't manage it anymore. Old lady coach trips from now on she says :(

I think this might be my tent's last summer. Am considering swapping it for a van. I am 50 :D

I can't say I haven't been tempted by a campervan... but tents don't need fuel or the same level of maintenance. I really can't justify to myself getting a campervan.

Camper vans are so expensive. You could stay in luxury hotels for the same cost.

Ours cost 1500 and doubles as a van/people carrier. Use it all the time. Bargain imo.

That said, it's a camper in the sense that all the seats fold down and we stick a mattress on top. It's not one of those silly things with a sink in it.

If you can't cook, shower and shit in it, it's just a more comfy version of sleeping in your car really.

It's heavenly compared to sleeping in a car. It's flat for a start. We've got a futon mattress, memory foam topper, pillows, little places to put drinks, lights, that sort of thing. It's well comfy.

Who want's to shit next to their bed anyway? Or cook next to it for that matter.

We have a Mazda Bongo campervan (very basic) and most camp sites allow small vans like ours. I've stayed in some fabulous places. And then there's all the festivals. You can' beat a warm dry bed at a festival :D

Been looking at them for the last 8 years, still umming and arring. I do still love camping too though.

Too right! I don't think I'd go to any festivals any more if I didn't have the van. We have a Bongo too! :D

been looking at getting a van for going to festivals and other events and seeing what it's like to live in one a bit
not sorted one yet and got a festival next month and then at least a couple more in the summer which will be camping.
got a half decent tent with a bit for putting bits and wet stuff

so, in answer to OP, not yet (43) but would if got a van

I'm looking at Bongos for festivalling once I've passed my test. Might not be until next year, the van that is, but Bongos seem to be reasonably reliable once cooled, and a good price and not quite the burglar magnet that VWs are, lovely as they are.

They're nearly all automatic which is also good. Well, good for me as I have an auto licence

We converted an rb44 to a camper for the FIL a couple of years ago and he loves it. I like our tent though, nice and cosy ex military 9x9 canvas tent with inner to keep it warm/cool

We are off to just outside Portsmouth for the bank holiday, be about 10 of us I think

Is it the one you had when we went to uffington in 2009? If so that's been a bloody good tent!
