Maybe you can help me mx wcfc I’m back to Reading in a month - for the Dentist. I’m thinking I may go out for a few beers afterwards in town and maybe get a FEB while I’m at it.

What pubs / caffs would you recommend?

That was my first visit to Reading since March 2020, so any comments may well be out of date. I believe Puddy_Tat, chilango and possibly souljacker have better, and certainly more recent knowledge than me.

the reason for the visit was a work thing - we ate at the Three Guineas - stupidly expensive, not my choice at all, and the ale isn't brilliant. It was all I could do to pour 4 pints down my throat.

If I'd paced myself better, I'd have gone on to the Nags Head after - Instead I just had a pint at the Greyfriar - decent local ale in a local, independent pub. No food though. The excellent Castle Tap doesn't open till 6, and doesn't do food. Nor does the Alehouse, which doesn't open at all till 21/6 (fingers crossed).

For cheese and ale (take away - the Grumpy Goat). The Shed was where I used to go for a sandwich at an independent local place.

But, honestly, it's been so long since I've been in Reading I really can't help.

In the town centre? or a bit out in any particular direction?

Pub wise my current fave is the Weather Station, sorta between town and the hospital. But it's pretty much a hipster craft joint so if that's not your thing...

The aforementioned Castle Tap on the opposite edge of town is good. In the centre itself the Allied Arms in a nice, chilled traditional place. Aside from there and the Alehouse. I'm not sure there's anywhere else in the centre I'd go.

Heading in the hospital/University side of town the Lyndhurst is fine, the Retreat hidden but decent. The Hope & Bear ok and on campus itself Park Bar is cheap and does good local beer in a lovely setting. The Fisherman's Cottage on the canal as you leave town walking towards the Thames is a pleasant place to sit, but I think their beer selection isn't what it was.

Heading West the only place I know is the taproom of Double Barrelled which is fantastic but v limited opening hours.

If you fancy a walk along the river it's not that far to Sonning where the Bull is nice.

FEBs aren't my thing. I think you'll struggle in the town centre. People always talk about the Gorge Cafe on the bridge to Caversham though.

Failing all that you could 'spoons it at the Back of Beyond. It has a Riverside "garden" and will do you some sort of FEB and passable beer for a reasonable price. It's still obviously a 'spoons though.

The best stuff in Reading is slightly out of town. If you like ale, the Fox and Hounds in Caversham is excellent as is the Nags Head. There is also the Alehouse in town but that hasn't reopened since lockdown and I don't know when it will. It's also tiny and smells of old mans farts. For Cafes, Cafe Yolk is great but up near the Uni area. If you are happy with just lager type pubs there are loads. My fave will always be the Purple Turtle but others will definitely disagree. There is also a Brewdog (don't tell editor) as well as the excellent Allied Arms.

The Shed that mx wcfc mentioned is a fantastic little sandwich shop though if you aren't after a fry up. I can also recommend Pierres round by the St Marys Butts church.

They are planning to open on 21/6, unless things change.

TBH, I'm not sure whether it smells better now than before the smoking ban, but then, I used to be one of those old men.

Thanks chilango souljacker and mx wcfc

I think I ought to try the Gorge as I’ve never been there before. I may as well crawl back through taaaarn, before I get a bus back to my mates for when they finish work.

Although I lived in Reading for 20 years I hadn’t worked in the centre since 2004, and rarely went to pubs except for rugby matches.

I like the Allied Arms and the Retreat, so they’re on the list, maybe somewhere else too. I’m a cider / lager or ale man depending on the mood. Different drink for different needs. I’ve got an afternoon to kill before heading back to my friends so I can use some of those choices

i'm not really up to date - not been out to pubs / caffs much lately, and even less idea what's still trading.

there's a bit of a hipster / expensive trend in food locally.

have heard good things about the nags head, just off oxford road. food looks like slightly expensive bar snacks rather than meals.
