When I were a lad and worked ont farm, bales were oblong and could be picked up and flung onto a trailer. We would pick them up by the baler twine, knee them up into the air then bounce then up to the top with our forearms. First day I did this I wore shorts and a T-shirt. My knees and arms were scratched to shreds by the straw.
There's loads of square/oblong? ones in the sheds across the field. Think they sell them for bedding and cylindrical** ones for feed.

**Happy now Cupid ?
