Vintage hairdressers

I've set myself a weightloss goal and once I get it I'm treating myself to a decent haircut but I'd like it in a vintage style. Does anyone know any decent vintage hairdressers that cut not just style in the south?

south of what?

Miss Betty at Something Hells in Kingly Court, Carnaby street is fucking amazing. Mind you, this was a few years ago that I last went.

South as in anywhere between Birmingham and the south coast but not including Cornwall. So south of the country really. I've found a couple online but wondered if anyone had personal recommendations

What is a vintage hairdressers?
What kind of cut are you looking for?
ime, standard hairdressers don' really deliver the right cuts to allow you to go on and do vintage sets for curling and so on. It's a specific length and profile to the layers. Which I get around now but having a more modern cut, but I'm still surprised that even in quite trendy, alternative hairdressers, they struggle to give me a standard, heavy, blunt, slightly rounded up at the ends fringe, in the style of Bettie Page. It's hardly unusual these days, but nine times out of ten they try to 'take the weight out of it' or feather cut the bottom edge, or cut it much longer than I want.

A vintage hairdresser is a completely different experience - though they come into their own even more for styling.

Old lady salons can be good for vintage cuts, you can ask them for a midi

I do think it depends *what* you want done Dovydaitis ? What are you thinking you want to do with your hair? And what you generally *do* with your hair day to day...

I do think it's a whole lot of marketing in some regard, a good hairdresser should be able to give you what you want done when you ask them. :D pics help...

I didn't have any problems in getting a Louise Brooks or a five point bob out of a normal hairdresser.

Not a bad idea zenie! I tend to do a lot of 40/50's styles in the summer. Problem I have is very fine hair and my local hairdresser insists on feathering in taking weight out..... Also an excuse to go clothes shopping ;)

If you have fine hair and your hairdresser wants to take the weight out, get a new hairdresser :)
Honestly :)

If you want a hairdresser that genuinely understands the science and cutting of hair, go to Sassoons. Or at least someone who has not only been trained at Vidal Sassoon as it was once, but who has also worked for Vidal Sassoon.

This is the 5th hairdresser I have known who insists on taking weight out, no wonder I hate getting my hair cut.

Hmm, might try that too, thanks shirl

So when you say you have very fine hair, are you meaning that each individual hair is very fine but you have far too much of it?

exactly that. My hair has been compared to baby hair. Lots of it but very fine.
Ok, my advice still stands then, yet yourself to someone who knows how to cut hair properly :)

Also reading this thread it seems that spanglechick is thinking vintage as 40's hair with rolls and stuff and zenie is thinking 30's bob or sassoons 5 point bob from 1963. Both are vintage but very different.

I can't read either of their minds so I don't really know what they are thinking, just guessing :D
What is your vintage look?

Yes - that was my assumption. Ime, most hairdressers can manage bobs, but struggle with 40s/50s styles which have to be cut a certain way to accommodate later roller-setting.

Victory rolls, though, work fine on longish one-length hair.

I do a mix of 40's and 50's styles in the summer of when I have a decent cut. I do like the idea of the middy though. Next step, find a decent hairdresser, easier said than done...

Thanks though ladies, all appreciated :)

My hairdresser is academy trained (as opposed to salon) so has a full knowledge of vintage styling and the corresponding appropriate cuts. I had a heavy 50s pinup fringe for years and he has done some amazing up-dos on me. East/central (eta: London) and not cheap, but he is lovely. Pm me if you want details :)

I've had a consultation with someone who trained in the early 60's and cuts pensioners hair, she thinks it will suit my hair and might even make it look thicker!
That sounds hopeful. With any luck she'll be right. :)
