Upgrading from Nikon D50 advice

nightowl

Another day on that hamster wheel we call life
I haven't done any DSLR photography for a few years now but recently dragged my old Nikon D50 out of the cupboard and have been thinking about doing an evening course. I'm not hugely technically minded so am not really up on different specs, photography developments etc and was wondering if I was thinking of upgrading (I've got some vouchers I need to use up so a new camera is one option) what would be the main benefits. The D50 doesn't do filming and the autofocus tends to hunt around a bit sometimes so I guess those would be two areas of improvement. Any other main ones?

Look at the mirrorless range now, dslr’s are being discontinued. They’re so much better than old dslr’s 👍

Cheap though. I picked up a D810 with 40K actuations for about £400 the other day. The F-mount pro lenses like 14-24, 24-70 & 70-200 are going brand new for about a half the price.

I can't see myself going mirrorless for a while and there'll be adapters for F -> Z mount anyway

If I was starting out now, with lots of cash to spend, I'd go mirrorless - something like a Nikon Z6II and kit lens. As it is, I'm using a Nikon D700 (came out in 2008) and lenses going back to the late 1970s, and it does everything I need.

What kind of photography do you want to do? And how much might you want to spend? A bit more info would help people make recommendations.

I bought a used Nikon D800 some years ago. They are now selling for about £300 on MPB, today I would likely buy a used D810 because of a few improvements over the D800.

Then I have 5, F mount lenses. My lenses are AF rather than AFS which means even with the adaptor they won't AF on a Nikon Z (mirrorless) body.

It is no matter because I am happy with DSLRs and F mount lenses are quite budget now if I scour MPB.

Ah, I'm in this quandary...Got a bit of cash to spend, basically deciding whether upgrade to Z (or stick with AF-S and get a 400mm/2.8, which on the second hand market is about the same price)

If your 400mm 2.8 is an AFS lens you could buy it and still later switch to a Z mirrorless body and continue to use it with an adaptor.

Me I am a skinflint, I am sticking to used Nikon DSLRs and luckily there are many and also many F mount lenses. The last lens I bought is an 85mm f1.4 which is a screw drive AF.
