Trying to remember a film

A brit film, young couple, late 80s early 90s production (I think. Could be later but not much later). He plays a (fictional) boardgame which I think is called 'Pits and Palaces' for real money. Increasingly high stakes games. Thats all I can recall and its been bugging me for ages. Any ides. Google is worse than useless these days. Might as well bring back fucking lycos
