Utterly dire trashy American romp cruelly foisted upon unsuspecting children OR best film of the decade blah blah blah

I think it gave me long-lasting psychological trauma, and should have a fifteen certificate.

Within an enchanting morality play of americana style there is a deeper meaning about stripping away the curtain the Wizard that serves as a metaphor for the yankee myth of egalitarian society. Which means Glinda is basically Lady Liberty.

note also that Glinda as Liberty is powerless to protect herself, but must be 'saved' by an immigrant. The main characters are all seekers after something. It's a metaphor for the american dream

love it, spesh now it's been revamped and look marvellous, went to the nft to see the new print recently and it's mindblowing. story lags a bit in the end, but i love the movie.

srsly?

it's a bloody good story: good and evil, scary flying monkeys, peril and rescue, a quest...

The "my parents don't understand me" theme is universal and speaks directly to kids, the sepia-to-technicolour aspect is as startling a 'special effects' depiction of another world as has ever been achieved on film...

Films for kids now tend to have a little inbuilt cynicism and injokery for the grown-ups and this film is light on that (although the bureacracy of Oz and the 'man behind the curtain stuff' delivers a little) but mostly it's a film for children. Trying to assess its entertainment value as an adult is missing the point somewhat.

Oh and "Somewhere over the rainbow" is an absolute stonker of a ballad, requiring quite breathtaking technical skill to sing.

Didn't see it until I was about 18 or 19, so it was all a bit 'Yeah, well made film for the period, can see how it might scare the kiddies' etc, no really strong feelings on it otherwise.

seen 'Wicked'? I was highly sceptical, but got free tickets and was utterly blown away. I recommend.

no would love to but never have a spare 80 quid for tickets. :D

I didn't find Wizard of Oz scary, Return to Oz scared the shit out of me aged 6.

how can you not find the wicked witch of the west scary?!
she still makes me feeling well-spooked...

Love that film. RTE used to show it every xmas. American cinema at it's best.

There's a wonderful version of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" by the late Israel Kamakawiwo'ole. Check it out.
