it's got that HORRIBLE synth noise burbling along and then it just turns into another one of their bloated rock songs. :(

never heard it.

i have heard "transylvania" by mcfly though, but that's not really got anything to do with this thread.

its a top tune.

Probably one the earliest and most effective uses of sequenced synths as well.

piss simple three chord riff built up into epic proportions.

At the time it was considered to be a major innovation and most later Who songs were bloated rock songs anyway. Despite the fact that the early Who stuff knocks the socks off their later output it certaintly isn't one of their worst efforts.

this is what amazes be about people's opinions of the Who. Their early days -the stuff collected on Meaty, Beaty Big & Bouncy for example - is brilliant. Snappy, witty, compact brilliant pop music. Then - very quickly - they turned into this leaden rock behemoth and that's the stuff people laud.

For most of their allegedly golden period they were more a bloody PROG band than a mod group

i love the who but arn't all that fussed about remembering the names of their songs so i looked this up and its "teenage wasteland"

and roger daltry. i would ;)

I like it in a noseful-of-speed, barechested, macho, fists in the air kinda way.

Plus Keith Moon's drumming is way k3w1.

.

When I saw the Who on their 25th anniversary tour I have to say....I reacted in that very same way. :)

Townsend did nick the synth sound from Baba, and I can't for the life of me remember from who - Townsend was more of a guitar-based writer, init.

In the contex of time and place, it's very distinct and def original. Great intro, imo - poss downhill after the intro.

The fact that people are discussing the very song, decades after it came out, says summat about it's quality and the musicians who produced it. :p

That's not a logical statement in any sense. I started the thread because people were always banging on about it, it came on the radio and it struck me - again - that it was shite. How does that equate with the very fact it's being discussed being some mark of quality? :D

'Who's Next' from which this track comes is a fair album from them. Haven't heard it for ages (swapped it for Dr Sardonicus-Spirit) Won't get fooled again and Behind blue eyes stick in my mind. Far better than t***y dirge.

I'm with Editor on this one. Alright tune, but Moon's drumming is unbelieveable. It's also a great song to play along with if you're learning guitar- 3 chords and a windmill action.

Fucking tune. A big, overblown rock song yes, but a lesson in how to actually write a big, overblown rock song properly.

Did of of the mod bands stay mod? It seems to me that what makes that mod scene so precious is that it didn't last long and was a musical period more than anything else.

well it's provoked some discussion. By that token, what's the point of any thread about something you like or don't like?

We're not at home to Mr Grumpy
