There's also all the training a multitude of beardies were getting in the anti Assad alliance countries, with western supervisors of course, before they left whatever Al Qaeda affiliate or FSA unit they were in and joined IS . Probably the best people to speak to as regards their capabilities are the ones who've been fighting them . Robert Fisk has been all over Syria , and according to the troops he's talked to, such as the ones who retreated fromPalmyra the situation is frightening . At one point when they breached ISILs front lines they found masses of first grade body armour , enough ammo to equip all the fighters with about 10,000 rounds , thermal missiles , American communication equipment . Basically a lot of their kit , and that of the other terrorist groups , is better than the Syrian armies . They employ waves of armoured suicide trucks over vast fronts, as well as suicide squads who fight to the last and only then blow themselves up . One Syrian officer told Fisk IS basically outgun and outnumber them , and once they get close to you it's game over . That they have to be killed before they can get close .
Any outfit getting state assistance , and it's a cert turkey and a couple of others are assisting them and have been for years , is a formidable force . Not unbeatable by any means but a force to be reckoned with .
