The great country show flood of 2014

We had a great day yesterday so persuaded some other people to come down. The rain started just as I was walking down Denmark hill, got soaked and then we all piled into a humid and sweaty herne hill pub. Oh well, yesterday was ace!

Got drenched leaving. Walking behind a young lady whose dress had gone somewhat see though in the rain... then realised that a gaggle of leery old men were all peering over my shoulder. Yeuch! I told them all to get lost

I remarked to Greebo (positioned as we are, we can see everyone using the Cressingham Gdns exit from the park) that while cotton summer dresses are great for keeping cool, they're not brilliant as modesty-guards once wet. There were a lot of women walking with a forearm across their bust, and quite a few blokes trying to look nonchalant as they leched.

It wasn't a flood

it was a bit soggy though. More importantly, if there's another big storm bigger than this one, will this thread have to be renamed "The Big Flood of 2014", and the next one "The Great Flood". If

It'll be like Vicar of Dibley

Owen Newitt: Filthy weather.

Jim Trott: No no no no no no no no I've known worse.

Owen Newitt: Oh yes? When was that, then?

Jim Trott: The Great Storm, when the windmill got blown over.

Owen Newitt: That wasn't the Great Storm; that was a moderately windy night. No, the really great storm was the Great Storm.

Jim Trott: When was that, then?

Owen Newitt: When Dave Batt got decapitated.

Jim Trott: That wasn't the Great Storm.

Owen Newitt: Well, it was pretty damn great.

Jim Trott: No, the greatest storm was the one when Old Harold got blown into the quarry.

Owen Newitt: Ooh, that! The Great Winds.

Jim Trott: The what?

Owen Newitt: The Great Storm there's got to be rain, and in the Great Winds there was just wind.

Letitia Cropley: Nasty night. It reminds me of the Great Storm.

Owen Newitt, Jim Trott: Shut up!

I can assure you that the Chucklehead -wielding wearer of the black dress had thought the rain issue through in some detail and was therefore able to be drunk and drenched with confidence
It's why I was mostly in black both days too. No matter how wet, it doesn't become more translucent.

Bits of Brixton Hill flooded though
Given the state of the local drains, and how often the gutters block, that's not saying much, is it? Although I'm sure it was a nuisance for anyone whose things got wet and damaged by the exceptionally heavy rain (and let's not think about what else could be in overflowing drains).

Including the Sainsbury's Local nearest to the South Circular junction, which had to closed while they mopped all the water out.

Apparently there was flooding up by Brixton/Streatham Hill

oops, that's pretty much where you said :D

I was thinking of the Sainsbury's by BWL

Minnie_the_Minx - I was one of the members of staff under said waterfall and I can assure you, that it was not an accident, but a decision to sacrifice the last scrap of dry clothing any of us had (two members of Vauxhall City Farm staff and a member of Lambeth security) for crowd safety. The roof had slipped off the frame and was filling up with water and looked like it might collapse completely, bringing the roof - and rather a lot of rain - down on everyone standing underneath said marquee and the only way to fix this was by two us lifting a third person up, to grab hold of and pull the marquee roof back into place, while a number of very kind lads pushed at the puddle from underneath, emptying it over us. Believe me, we knew we were going to get VERY wet and removed all phones and other non waterproof items from our pockets before going in, but it was something that needed to be done.
I was hoping there might be photographs somewhere on the internet, as it was a pretty hilarious moment and will certainly go down in Vauxhall City Farm history, so thank you for those!! If anyone has any more, myself and the other member of staff would love to see them!

And yes, Ben, Tom and Jerry are indeed alpacas and the sign was indeed an explanation of the difference between alpacas and llamas. They were sheared for a film project and will get a proper hair cut asap :)

I am glad there are now photos I can show mr snake :D I didn't realise how wet I was til we got to the flat. My hair was still damp yesterday but I had left it in its pleat overnight.

Hi Minnie,

I work for the South London Press. We were at the show on Saturday and got some lovely pics of people enjoying the sun. But unfortunately our photographer was not there on the second day when the heavens opened! Your pics are great, is there any chance we could use one in the newspaper?

Best wishes,

Henry
