The dog thread is better than the cat thread, because it features dogs.

Stinky dog has arrived for his holiday. 3 days earlier than expected…I booked a groomer/shampoo for his arrival day 4th.

So he got chucked straight in the shower with dog shampoo for an amateur grooming effort

The horrible shit still stinks, in fact probably smells worse now and damp

Will have to tough it out till the pro groomer sorts it out. I’m pulling up my carpets and stashing them so it doesn’t sink in to the rugs

The good news is he is chilled in cars and doesn’t appear to eat the furniture if left alone

0630 walks are good for my soul :D

How can that be comfortable? Having your schnoz all squished to the side. Mad dog. We are having some success with fireworks this year, with CBD oil in her evening meal, games when they start if she's awake (the same one, throwing treats for her to catch or find), white noise if they start and she's sleeping. The white noise surprised me, but she loves it and will curl around my phone. Big baby :D <3

We aren't going out any evenings this weekend (not that we do much) because Willow. The funny thing is they didn't bother her when she was younger, we even took her to displays as a pup. Now she wants to climb on our laps when she heads them.

Same here. Cara's first year she was totally unphased, it's just got worse and worse. She barks at us in total panic now. The CBD has made a huge difference, she still freaks when she hears them but is much easier to distract and calm down. Couldn't get through to her at all last year. And now we do the same game she's starting to expect something good after the initial fright. My old boy used to cower in his box and shake.

I’m finding looking after a 50 kg dog in a flat is a hard grind

He won’t even piss in the yard so it’s comfort walks every couple of hours. I’m getting up at 0630 because if I need an early morning piss no doubt he does.

And in the two years since I last looked after him he has developed noisy intimidating reactivity on the lead which makes even the safest quiet walking routes a bit fraught/less fun

Humphrey is like this. He just barks and barks and we can’t calm him at all, he’s so heightened.
Xanax did nothing.

We might try CBD, do you buy it online?

Rebelda, Looby, have you tried pet remedy ?
Yeah we have the plug ins, wipes and spray. No obvious effect.
We’ve also got a thunder shirt.
Classic FM on.
Won’t take treats, won’t play, won’t snuggle up.
Honestly, it feels like nothing soothes him during fireworks. 😞
They were still going at 10.30 last night.

This came up in my memories today. Lucy leapt into Mr Looby’s lap after a big bang. ❤️ She was such a big baby. 😄

I did rather think you may have but it was with a go.

(((( Humphrey )))) and ((((Lucy))))

Thankfully none of my three get too upset at fireworks, maybe Dax as a terrier will whine and run about a bit but it's never been a quiet calm house so they're accustomed to sudden noise; Harry will sleep through it and Luna won't care. We've had fireworks here without incident and we're not bothering this year at all.

Hope tonight goes ok for those with nervous pooches x

Been following the last few posts closely - Nico absolutely wasn't arsed about fireworks so I've never really encountered firework fear; Blue otoh... If we're out and there's a even a pop in the distance, that's it, walk over & he wants to dash home asap. Indoors, he can't settle & wanders around whining. Nothing too traumatic in the grand scheme really so don't know if it's worth getting CBD or other things that have been suggested?

Honestly, if they’re terrified of fireworks then I don’t think there is much to be done other than to provide a safe hole for them to cower in while you jolly on as normal. Comforting them reinforces that there is something wrong and no remedy is going to do more than take some edge off a serious fear of what is a very real thing they can hear. If they are not too far gone, they might take treats during the bangs, which will help condition a positive association. If they’re terrified, though, they probably won’t be interested.

It’s 50/50 how he responds to people and other dogs when he is on the lead. Previously it was only Alsatian’s and the occasional shady bloke he lunged and barked at

I’m having to actively manage going around corners, entering choke points at beaches.

Bear in mind this is the hound I used to assess my fosters with. He isn’t aggressive and he reads other dogs well. Off lead he has great recall and is fine with all dogs he meets

He’s just learnt this on lead lurching and loud barking somewhere along the line in the last two years.

I’m keeping distance, sitting him and rewarding him but I doubt a weeks worth of that will make a dent in the behaviour

And he’s still a foul smelling food dustbin of a dog :D

This is all well and good if you've got a dog that will do that, but if you've got one that goes for panic and anger then you need to take the edge off to get anywhere. Cara will bark at us, jump on your head, jump at the doors trying to escape, knock things over, pull all the blanket and sofa cushions off, totally unbearable. CBD has made her reachable for positive reinforcement and to notice that we're going about our usual business not giving a fuck. Then she will cower for a bit. It's work this year, but no one's crying like last year. Taking the edge off is really useful sometimes I guess is what I'm saying.

Light Friday fireworks cause the borrowed dog to bark at the window all night.

Saturday I watched “All quiet on the western front” with the dog while fireworks were going off all around and he wasn’t bothered in the slightest

Our ring cameras have definitely earned their money so far.
Last week it caught Albert standing up as Mr Looby steps over him and nearly taking him out. He does this a lot.
This week Albert flatly refused to move when the plumber arrived and played dead. Camera captures Mr Looby dragging him into the dining room so he can let plumber in.

It’s brilliant. 😄
