The Bicycle Racing Thread 2014

Anyone else seen the story behind alberts amazing recovery from the leg break? All those stitches, infection, loads more stitches, lots of time off the bike coming into the vuelta...too good to be true!

ITV showed his leg after the operation. A bit of a mess. Quoted his surgeon regarding his performance who said 'he's never seen anything like it'.

Load of bullocks frankly.

On another note, check out this video of Tao Hart entering the final corner in today's Tour of Britain.

And here's what it looked like from a spectators point of view.

Overexcitement on his part? I spotted it live, whereas Porter and Smith missed it entirely

Regardless of his past, I've got to say Contador has just about the most beautiful riding style I've ever seen. So graceful, although maybe it's made more so against the monotonous Froome/Sky train.

^^ Contador has fucking style and frankly I don't care about his past on the assumption they were all at it.
Dancing on the pedals indeed.

French squad announced for the worlds:

Romain Bardet (AG2R-La Mondiale), Warren Barguil (Giant-Shimano), Nacer Bouhanni (FDJ.fr), Sylvain Chavanel (IAM Cycling), Tony Gallopin (Lotto-Belisol), Cyril Gautier (Europcar), Jean-Christophe Peraud (AG2R-La Mondiale), Kevin Reza (Europcar), Geoffrey Soupe (FDJ.fr).

Interesting that there are no FdJ riders going (at least none that'll be with the team next year). I know injuries and transfers have played a part in that, but odd none the less.

And the Belgians:

Jan Bakelants, Tom Boonen (Omega Pharma – Quick Step), Philippe Gilbert, Ben Hermans, Greg Van Avermaet (BMC Racing), Jelle Vanendert, Tim Wellens (Lotto-Belisol), Sep Vanmarcke (Belkin Procycling), Johan Vansummeren (Garmin-Sharp).

Italy:

Vincenzo Nibali, Fabio Aru (Astana), Giovanni Visconti (Movistar), Matteo Trentin (Omega Pharma – Quick Step), Daniele Bennati (Tinkoff-Saxo), Alessandro De Marchi, Damiano Caruso (Cannondale), Giampaolo Caruso (Katusha) and Manuel Quinziato (BMC Racing).

Ireland's team is not a surprise:

Dan Martin (Garmin), Nicolas Roche (Tinkoff), Philip Deignan (Sky).

ie the three Irish climbers. Sam Bennett (Net App) is reserve.

That is a bit odd about FDJ. Who are the French planning to ride for, by the way? I really can't tell.

Think the plan is to have several cards. Bouhanni with his lieutenants sitting in and, if he can hang on/other teams control things then sprint for the win. Gallopin from a reduced bunch, and Bardet and Barguil allowed to pop off and do their thing.

Some people are suggesting that the lack of FdJ riders is a slap on the wrists for Madiot not letting Bouhanni ride again until the Worlds. Possible that it's just a result of injuries and stuff - for example Vichot is injured, Demare is, iirc, recovering from illness and not as good an option for this course than Bouhanni etc.

I was watching the GP de Wallonie yesterday and noticed that Cofidis haven't given Loïc Chetout a team bike. He was on a Boardman and the rest of the team were on their normal Look 695s. Anybody know why?

Closest u23 world TT championship in history the other day. Flakemore (Australia) beat Mullen (Ireland) by 0.48 seconds. Kung (Switzerland) was 9 seconds back in third. Those three have been the best espoirs at the TT all year. Dibben (Britain) did very well in sixth.

The grown up race is tomorrow and looks pretty easy to predict. The only rider I can see challenging Martin is Wiggins.

Speculative the-other-two-might-fall bet on Dumoulin ftw @13.00 plus Rohan Dennis for podium @ 4.00.

Meh. No platform for mod-revivalism.

Or for people who accept knighthoods.

That said, a big accomplishment. He's not as good as Martin, but he was better on the big day. And now he has both the World and Olympic TTs to add to his Tour and one week races. Best British palmares by a mile, although Froome is very likely to overtake him in the end.
