The Bicycle Racing Thread 2014

Bad times for Dutch cycling. Giant-Shimano still looking for a sponsor for next year, and now Belkin have confirmed they won't be renewing.

edit: in other news, Eurosport seem to be showing classic Tour stages - presumably between now and the start.

Sky Tour squad:

Froome Porte Nieve Lopez Thomas Kiryienka Siutsou Pate Zandio

That's the weakest support squad they've sent in a long time. Not that it will matter if Froome goes full alien. But in theory, Contador should have a notably stronger team. Porte's form will be important.

Froome will just have to huff prednisolone inhalers (therapeutic) all the way up Hautacam.

Ulissi returns adverse analytical finding at Giro.

edit: over the allowed levels of Salbutamol.

Some cycling news poster. On closer inspection I seem to have been gullibly jumping the gun.

There are however not a lot of other options on the table right now. Henao is injured, EBH is injured, I believe Stannard is injured and Kennaugh has apparently been sick. Cataldo and Deignan did the Giro and weren't expecting do to the Tour, so a last minute conscription would be a real sign of desperation.

The rumour is that Eisel and Knees aren't wanted by Froome as they are firmly pro-Wiggins. You would think though that anyone would prefer an Eisel over a Zandio on this parcours. But there really isn't much available beyond them that would be an improvement.

Now other posters saying Eisel is in.

I really should know better than to take stuff off a forum anyway, so all of my last few posts are probably best ignored.

DLR London.

Irish men's TT championships were decided by bureaucratic foolishness. The fastest time by a minute was set by a 19 year old, but the second place finisher is declared champion because u23s can only win the u23 gold.

Wiggins hammered everyone in the GB race.

Leading to a twitter storm demanding he be allowed to ride the tour from what I gather.

In other news, Chava wins the French TT champ for the 3rd time in a row, 6th time in total. As much a reflection on the dearth of TT talent in France as it is on his talent, but fair fucks to the guy.

If any more Sky riders get injured they'll be roping in random commuters to avoid taking Wiggins.

Agree about Chavanel. That's a great record, and you can only beat what's in front of you, but seriously does nobody practice their TT over there at all?

It's funny because it's true :D.

Think folk are *starting* to take TTs seriously in France. I've seen comments from FdJ in particular talking about wind tunnel testing and stuff, and AG2R are slowly moving into the late 20th century.

:D

Speaking of Ag2r, Peraud's time didn't seem too hot. If he's not in form they'll be seriously pissed off, what with Betancur busy kicking back in Colombia.

He was poor at Dauphiné too, but didn't seem bothered by that. Was just returning from altitude iirc. Quick look at previous results suggests that, 2009 excepted, he never does all that well in the nationals so not quite panic stations yet. If he's not up to it though, he'll make a decent domestique for Bardet.

Hutch on twatter:

"National TT champs. Only gone and won it."

Not sure I'd be celebrating a win-by-technicality quite so much.

Sky team announced:

Froome, Porte, Thomas, Nieve, Eisel, Kiryienka, López, Pate, Zandio

So basically Eisel in place of Siutsou and your team was spot on. Then again, they only have so many riders who aren't broken or in the doghouse.

edit: And in other news, Thor is to retire after after the Worlds.

I didn't realise Hutch could do the Irish TT champs...has he always done this? He's raced the British champs before and done commonwalth games under the NI flag. I suppose if he has an Irish race licence then technically he has dual nationality in cycling terms.

Either way that victory sucks.

According to CQ ranking he has for the past 3/4 years. Seems to have ridden both in 2011 which is curious.

A lack of sideburns?

Well yeah, but Siutsou is also free of mod revivalist affectations and he's going to be sitting at home scratching his arse. Same with Knees. I can't really see a sporting reason to have Zandio (or at this stage in his career Pate) in ahead of them.

Hutchinson switched to an Irish racing licence at some point in recent years. Which is fair enough. And it's not his fault that the rules excluded Mullen from the elite race. It is an awkward situation though, winning when everyone knows you came second.

Well they certainly don't have their eyes on the White Jersey. Youngest team member is Thomas at 28. I think the average is 32. Do any other teams come close to this?
