The Bicycle Racing Thread 2014

Just caught up with the final stage of 4 days of Dunkirk. Very, very clever attack from Engoulvent to take the stage win - must have been at least 2/3 seconds before Zingle realised he'd gone.

Also, have some on-bike footage of the sprint in ToC courtesy of Degenkolb/Giant.

edit: the linky my be handy

Carnage in the Giro today. One of my pre-race picks (Arredondo) dropping 18 minutes. I genuinely fear for the safety of riders when I put money on them/pick them for my fantasy team :D

edit: and a cracking win for Phinney in Cali.

Rule change in UCI hour record - standard pursuit bikes now allowed, Obree's times reinstated but record set with Solenskas 49.7km...I have not made it very clear - read the article. The good news is the old bollocks about having to ride a bike that was state of the art in 1972 but not a new one is gone. This will almost certainly re-ignite interest in the hour and perhaps see Chinny, Wiggins, Martin, Phinney et al have a bash on low pro kit.

Good news!

To be fair Kelly thought it was fair game, and it's not like Bumchin Evans hasn't been on the other end of that sort of stuff in the past. As much as I reckon it is a tad unsporting, one thing's for sure; the likes of Hinault wouldn't have had their domestiques drive the pace to hurt their rivals like that. They'd have got on the front themselves and made sure the job was done properly.

I thought it fair enough too - maglia rosa was there so whats the problem? There is far too much of this 'lets neutralise the race' bollocks going on, I don't want to see riders reduced back to the levels of peasantry and serfdom they endured in the 70s but at the same time there is probably too much rider power right now. This is the Giro, if you don't like it go and race somewhere else; if you are here to race HTFU.

Evans should sleep easy - as long as he is prepared to endure having piss thrown at him for 2 weeks. He is probably the rider least capable of enduring some of the more colourful marks of appreciation the 'tifosi' have in store for him, so it could be riveting.

My point was a technological one. Kelly was trying to justify himself by saying maybe Evans didn't know what happened, which is plain daft. Broadly in agreement with Sigmund Fraud - I love the craziness of the Giro.

Sigmund Fraud, is Evans not quite popular with the tifosi? Thought he was quite an Italophile.

He is but the is the Giro and he's not native - if the Gazetta editorial turns against him for that move he should expect a rough ride all the way to the end. Given his difficulty dealing with cheeky journos that could be quite amusing.

Not that I dislike Evans - he is a gutsy rider if not a spectacular one*

*Worlds ride excepted

Right, cheers. For what it's worth, I imagine Bouhanni will get more grief for his "numerical indication of stages won" celebration after stage 7 than Evans will for sitting on the Maglia Rosa's wheel the day before.

Not that that my opinion in these matters often counts for much :D.

Wathing today's stage as live from a recording just now and it's a proper fucking bike race. 3km to go and still no idea if the win will come from the break of the day, the counterattacker or the group of favourites.

edit: and as an added bonus, Scarponi has taken a packet.

edit: Aredondo :(

edit edit: Rolland :(

i walked to victoria today. I walked to Victoria to one of the few cinema's that has been showing accidental death. i arrived 45 minutes before the showing time They had sold out of tickets; what a joke! What does that tell the cinema people; the film has a wider audience than they catered for! MIFFED, well miffed.
BTW Cuddles is too old to win a grand tour. He wont keep form up right to the end of the Giro.
Is Wiggo also not too old for the hour.
Wold sex lies and handle bar tape not make for a great film?

So who is Bouhanni off to next year? Sounds like he's keen for a move, which is kind of a shame but I've always thought he would do well to go to a team that might focus on him as their "star".

No idea where Bouhanni is going. Perhaps OGE - a team that's basically an enormous lead out train with no really good sprinter? That's where I'd want to go if I was a promising second tier sprinter. Goss just hasn't cut it.

Cannondale if they lose Sagan would be another possibility, although they can't offer much stronger support than FDJ. Garmin could use a good sprinter, but they've got rid of most of their big lumps over the last couple of years and have other ambitions too.

OGE is quite a good shout actually. I've been trying to think of teams that can afford him and where he won't be playing second fiddle. Thinking about it a bit more though, Cannondale do have a French sponsor and it does sound like Sagan is off at the end of the year.

On the subject of young French sprinters, I saw Demare's comments the other day where he reckons he has the beating of Cav at the Tour. Fighting talk.

Interesting weekend of racing. Feeling a lot less smug about betting against Quintant at the minute.

Have it on reasonable authority the Wiggo-ometer for riding tdf is swinging deep into the 'not' category.

As much as I'm as bored as he is about the speculation, it would be right special to see them both one last time (Plus there's a little bit of me that thinks (big) if Wiggo can keep Froomes wheel on the climbs he can do some damage on the TT (including the penultimate stage) and maybe Sky will re-assess it 3/4 of the way in!

But, as I said, I think everything's such a pain in the arse with the egos I think they'll fuck him off (or not massage his sense of entitlement and he'll not go).

I have just read a review of froomes New biography in which he really has a go at wiggo. Come the tour will they be speaking yet alone supporting each other in a major race. I also hear they are both training in seperate countries at the mo. It does not bode well for the tour, especially as we are hosting the opening.

As much as a Lemond/Hinault situation would be hilarious, I'm kinda sick of the whole soap opera already and it doesn't even exist yet.

Blimey! Taylor Phinney has well and truly done the job on his leg. Broken it and done the knee. Undergoing surgery at the moment. Huge loss to B.M.C. team?

Hopefully JTL is saving up some revelations about the true nature of UK Postal's "marginal gains" to coincide with the TdF passing through Emmerdale. That would be sweet.

Unless he was being doped by the Sky/BC crowd before being cut off from the good shit after hhe signed for the team, then I doubt he has anything on anyone there. Seems obvious to me any doping was going on at Endura.
