The Bicycle Racing Thread 2014

Adam Yates takes the stage and the Yellow jersey in Turkey. Although celebrating a bit too early on the line...nearly costing him the overall lead.

Tour of Turkey delivering there. Conflicted feelings here as I like the cut of the Yates twins' jibs, but really not a fan of Greenedge.

Still, exciting few minutes racing.

Anyone know if there is any coverage due to be shown of the giro that is not on sky etc. talking of which, I see the accidental death of a cyclist is out in a few days.

Will be on Eurosport. ITV4 show le Tour live so might be on there? Also pretty sure I read somewhere about the BBC covering the Irish stages though may have made that up.

I don't have Eurosport. Can't find it on ITV. The only coverage I can find is first three stages live on BBC2 NI! Not exactly much good! Was hoping with all the Brit success over last year or two we might get recorded highlghts of the Giro at the very least!

So looking forward to this. Could be awesome.

Has everyone seen the Armstrong Lie film (available at all good torrent sites). Such an epic piss taking bastard (coming from someone that only really got into cycling about 2 years ago (and even later to understand road race cycling) so never quite saw the scale of his actions etc. What a hateable wanker!

Eurosport player can be subscribed to for, iirc, £3.00/month. Haven't used it so no idea about if it's worth it so would have a look about for reviews if you're thinking about it.

Failing that, check out steephill.tv and cyclingfans - they always have pretty comprehensive directories of available streams. Quality can obviously be poor on an illegal stream though.

Eurosport Player for £5.99 a month allows HD streaming through an Xbox. It's how I watch cycling.

How is it? Picture quality any good? An buffering problems, or connection dropping out or whatever?

Been thinking about getting it when I'm able to ditch Virgin telly but having spent a year watching cycling on choppy pirate streams I'm loathe to go back to anything even close.

Surprised there wasn't more interest in the 4 jour de dunkirk today - couple of stretched of P-R cobbles. In the wet.

Predictions for the next three weeks, then?

I've backed Arredondo (151.00), Evans (11.00) and Uran (16.00) e/w for the overall. I've also got Arredondo (7.50) and Geniez (9.00) to finish in the top-10, Evans to podium @ 3.00 and a comedy bet on AG2R to win the team classification @ 41.00.

Oh, and Movistar to win TTT @ 9.00.

Crosswinds, headwinds, sharp climbs, fast descents and echelons aplenty in Dunkirk today.

Blimey - does Dan Martin have a 'Schleck' type bike handling problem do you think? This was on dead straight road and the LBL blunder was reportedly a pedal strike to the ground. In the old days they would send you on a winter season of cross racing to cure these problems.

All I did so far was fivers on OPQS in the TTT and Petacchi on stage 2 and 3, which is unlikely but OPQS have been pretty kind to me this year.

No idea, but I transferred him out of my fantasy cycling team just this morning in a last-minute re-jig. Normally it goes the other way.

edit: having seen the crash, I'm prepared to give him some sort of benefit of the doubt. There are a couple of slightly sunken manhole covers on my commute that are treacherous - especially in the wet, or if you aren't cycling dead straight.

You're not (as far as I know!) a pro on a World Tour team though. Awesome bike handling skills should be a given at that level. Pro cycling's "Mr Sex" has had too many accidents for it to be just bad luck.

I though the guy in front of him fell first?. Bad luck though.

I'm also not generally unsighted by four other riders. Afaict, first manhole cover knocked Martin and whoever was behind him in the chain off balance, second one brought hi down - I assume due to wet metal/bikist in an unstable riding position trying to recover balance combo.

I'm sure it has to go down as a mistake, but not quite the "omg Dan Martin crashed going in a straight line" hyperbole that some quarters of the internet have been going in for. After all, it wasn't Schleck or Wiggins going downhill in the wet, imo. Or Bouhanni going round a corner in the dry for that matter.

Weird to see OPQS not contest a sprint; Petacchi looks like he's playing a fine domestique role. That looked so easy for Kittel.

Another great day's racing @ 4 days of Dunkirk today. Attacks left, right and centre - notably by Chava and IAM. Demare is a turning into a serious rider, imo.

Frighteningly strong sprint from Kittel today - and on something of an uphill finish too. Swift looking good for the reduced bunch sprints later in the race also.

It wasn't really an uphill finish. You would barely notice the slight incline walking along the street.

Great crowds out for the race, but dogshit stage design. Although I suppose stages that might in theory produce echelons are usually boring when they don't.

That'll teach me to listen to EUrosprt comms :D. Though I did also take into account the fact that Swift and EBH got involved.

Also: good to see so many out by the roads, and in pretty awful weather.
